Sultry and silky smooth is the voice of Grammy-nominated Brazilian singer-songwriter Bebel Gilberto, who will be performing at an exclusive event at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental on Thursday, 12 March 2015.
The one-night-only performance will be held on the same evening as the opening of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes’ exhibition at White Cube Gallery and kick off Hong Kong Art Week with Brazilian beats.
Ahead of her much anticipated performance, we asked Gilberto about bossa nova music, her new album “Tudo” and tips on her now-hometown, New York City.
To someone who’s never heard bossa nova… it’s like kissing and listening to the sea in the background with birds flying around.
My first memory of music was… my father’s guitar and mom singing along, a Jackson Five and Burt Bacharach.
Living in New York… changed not only my musical style, it also changed my mind, my music and myself. After becoming a New Yorker, to be honest, silence is my best friend.
My playlist is currently filled with… Blossom Dear, David Byrne and Joao Gilberto.
About art… I love art, always have. It’s exciting to be at Art Basel in Hong Kong. I am a very big fan and friend of Beatriz Milhazes, who will be exhibiting at White Cube.
My latest album is called Tudo… and the sound of Tudo is unique. Tudo means “everything” so you have a taste of everything in your mind as you are listening to the music.
The people I’d like to make an album with most are… Danger Mouse, Air and Georgio Moroder.
My three favourite hangouts in New York City are… CASA restaurant, which is a typical Brazilian restaurant. I love Central Park all year round — it’s really a present in the middle of Manhattan. Also, Anjelika Film Center always has a good selection of foreign films.
