Pairing a glass of whisky with chocolates is nothing new. The last six years, in fact, have seen the unconventional combination gradually becoming popular as the appreciation for Scotch whisky continues to grow around the world. And while it’s neither as common nor as easy to do as wine pairings, the delicate task of complementing whisky’s complex tastes with chocolates’s bitterness and sweetness is truly a highly rewarding experience.
This was exactly what friends of Lifestyle Asia KL discovered when we invited them for the second The Glenfiddich and Chocolate Concierge pairing event that was held at Omakase + Appreciate last 18 July. Model Jazel Lim, entrepreneur King Quah, socialite Elana Yaacob, and music producer Daniel Veerapen sampled a first-in-the-world chocolate that highlights the subtle tasting notes of the Speyside distillery’s 12- to 21-year-old single-malt Scotch whiskies.
“What we did is different. We actually worked to develop chocolates that go specifically with the whisky. They’re not something off the shelf. They’re completely new chocolates to go with our whisky. In fact, we even took it one step further,” Matthew Ferguson-Stewart, the regional ambassador of Glenfiddich, explained. Meanwhile, Chocolate Concierge founder Ong Ning Geng revealed that their Cask-strength Chocolate Cube was actually made from beans fermented in two Glenfiddich whisky casks — something that has never been done in chocolate-making before.
