Two years ago today, on October 13, 2016, the entire nation of Thailand ground to a halt and would spend the next year dressed in black as a display of deep mourning. The depth of sadness the entire nation felt at the loss of the late king has, to this day, not been seen anywhere else in the world. Regardless of any differences or disparities, Thais were were at a true loss by the departure of their father, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX.
For seven decades, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej was the “Father of the Nation” to the people of Thailand. As the constitutional monarch, his voice and noble insights made all the difference in times of crisis. In times of difference and conflict, it was his guidance alone that would end such fighting. His annual speeches on his birthday, December 5, was something all look forwarded to as this was the occasion he would reveal his pearls of wisdom and his views of the day.
Throughout his 70 year reign – the longest reigning monarch in Thai history and one of the longest in the world – he initiated thousands of development projects that have immensely benefited our country and people. The late King’s selflessness, fortitude and his love of country are still and will always be remembered.
The late King Bhumibol Adulyadej led an extraordinary life filled with impressive and valuable achievements. In remembrance of his greatness, we would like to honour him by depicting a few of the many key milestones in the late King’s life.
