Dude food feasts to treat dad this Fathers’ Day

The ugly truth: Dads can be quite the hardheaded and critical bunch. But if there’s one thing they can all agree on is the idea of getting down and dirty, especially when it comes to enjoying ‘real’ food.

Enter: ‘dude food’, with no concern for moderation nor decency. It’s a term that’s one of the most pandemic trends in the food world. Yes, we are talking about greasy and heavy meals; from street-selling stalls to the abundant cornucopia of indulgences at fancy buffets.

And there’s no better way to celebrate the spirit of tough and macho fathers than to feast on testosterone-filled cooking — unapologetic in its serving size and larger than life meals fit for Vikings.

If your dad is the uptight sort, this is the chance for him to let loose a little and get his hands dirty with some of the most grubby and messy meals KL city has to offer.

And with Fathers’ Day (and a long Aidilfitri weekend) just around the corner, we’ve helped you compile some of the most exciting places with real food for dudes to celebrate the man of the hour in beast mode.

Beast

Just like how the restaurant got its name, Beast plates up nothing but real grubby servings of steak in generous proportions. Great for sharing, treat dad with giant slabs of Porterhouse steak, which is served on a board and ordered by weight. This grass-fed Black Angus beef is tender and succulent; best served with sides of fries and duck-fat potatoes. Slather delicious sauces like chimichurri and truffle béarnaise, or beef jus gravy for an extra sinful pack of flavours.

Flour

Rooted in deep love for Indian food, husband-and-wife team Yogesh and Natasha share their passion for authentic north Indian cuisine at Flour. For a change, it will be great to enjoy a series of flour staples including puri, chapatti and kulcha, served with scrumptious curries and the show-stopping Lasooni Gosht (braised mutton garlic curry). Try their rice dishes – biryani and thali – as well.

Mosaic

If you’re bringing your dad for Sunday brunch, enjoy a wise array of buffet-style cuisine served at Mosaic in Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. Choose from the usual Asian treats, Arabic Mezzeh dips and bread, as well as wok-fried dishes for some good ‘wok-hei’ goodness. The extensive menu also comes with a choice of wine and beer if you’re up for it.

Xiao Fei Yang

If your dad can take the heat, have him up for a Sichuan challenge at Xiao Fei Yang; offering a scrumptious pot of piquant stew, steamboat style. With a mala broth that hits all the right spots, the stew goes beautifully thinly slice mutton and an assortment of vegetables. There’s also the herbal chicken soup alternative if mom is not up for a spicy treat; so you can enjoy both options.

Butcher's Block

A cavern for carnivores, Butcher’s Block is the place for your favourite cuts – freshly cut and cooked to perfection. You can never go wrong with their premium range of beef, lamb and poultry, which you can take home as well if you wish to prepare a feast at home. Complement your meaty dinner with their specialty cakes and a toast of their house pours.

Enorme

Enorme serves a great selection of Italian pizzas that are wood-fired and made with love. From the classic Margherita to something a little fancier like the Prosciutto di Pancetta, treat dad to an Italian pizza feast that is packed with cheesy goodness and fresh ingredients. Finish off with a slice (or two) of tiramisu, a must-have in any Italian treat.

Enorme, 20 PJ Centrestage, Jalan 13/31 Section 13, 40460 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, +603-7661 0651

Naughty Nuri's

Nothing beats a good serving of sticky pork ribs with tender meat that falls off the bones. Finger licking good, these ribs go absolutely well with Bali-inspired staples including their specialty Mee Goreng (fried noodles) and Nasi Goreng (fried rice). Naughty Nuri’s is available in various locations but we prefer the outdoor seats in Desa Sri Hartamas for a more hippy dining experience.

Mo-Mo Paradise KL

Enjoy free flow of good quality beef and pork for a whole 90 minutes at Mo-Mo Paradise. A popular place for shabu-shabu and sukiyaki, the all-you-can-eat buffet comes with a wide range of vegetables and mushrooms; as well as freshly made udon noodles. This is a great option for dads who are more conservative and health-conscious with their food choices.

Grub by Ahong & Friends

Don’t be fooled by its modest shopfront as the restaurant is quite the hidden gem in Seksyen 17. Opened by former Masterchef Malaysia contestant, dining in the restaurant requires an early booking and a little bit of patience. The menu offers a creative flair and good options that are all very reasonably priced. Some of the must-try favourites include the beetroot salad, pan-fried quail, perfect medium-rare steaks and their homemade sourdough.

Ate_Cetera

If you cannot decide over what to have, Ate_Cetera offers an expansive menu that lists down a mix of popular dishes from various countries. Try their ATC Nasi Goreng, The Benedict or confit duck leg served with waffles and truffle butter. For something more Asian-inspired, their Juseyo Chikin (juicy Korean chargrilled chicken burger) or Gochujang Bowl is something your dad would love. We’d recommend a seat outside – al-fresco style – for a more relaxing dining experience.
