The first two Ice Age were fun but underwhelming animations (Pixar had set the bar too high with the likes of Wall-E, Ratatouille, etc), the third Ice Age is immediately more relevant thanks to its fun use of 3D effects.
The group of prehistoric animals return, including Mammoth Manny (Ray Romano) and love Ellie (Queen Latifah), the two are getting ready to be parents but the rest are too busy going through something of a midlife crisis: Diego (Denis Leary), a smilodon, fears domestic tranquility has softened his instincts and desire as a hunter. Sid (John Leguizamo), a ground sloth, feels abandoned and adopts three baby dinosaurs. Simon Pegg is a welcome addition, voicing an excited one-eyed weasel who leads the crew into their adventure after the baby dinosaurs are taken.
All of Ice Age's best bits are snappy one liners and special effects, which is fine if you're just looking for a fun time, but that's a sign that the script is lacking. If you want an animation that will touch your core, wait for Up, but if you just want to kill time for two hours on a hot day, Ice Age 3D is serviceable.
