The premise of Up is quite simple: an old man and his flying house. But with Pixar, masterminds behind such modern day classics as Wall-E and Toy Story, their tales are always more than meets the eye.
The old man is Carl Fredricksen and the reason his house is airborne is because he tied thousands of balloons to it. He's doing it to fulfill his deceased wife's lifelong dream of moving their home to South America (although she probably didn't think they'd do it literally). Think this is another manipulative tearjerker? Not quite. With director Peter Docter's masterful direction, Up never settle for cheap laughs or cheap tears the way other movies of this type may have.
With a chunky sidekick by his side (and the early exchange between the two are amusing), Carl embarks on an adventure and in the meantime learns to see life in a new way.
Pixar never fails. With Up, they have crafted yet another masterpiece animation that resonates with both adults and children. For adults, the theme of losing a loved one and the loneliness that comes with it is about as engaging as anything on the screen this summer. For children, the vibrant 3D visuals with the adventurous tone makes for a wonderful ride. This is a must-see for anyone.
Up opens in cinemas: Hong Kong July 30th. Singapore August 6th. Thailand already in cinemas.
