Mention that there's a new Thai restaurant in town and the average Bangkokian will probably shrug their shoulders and say “So what?” Thai cuisine just doesn't get people all that riled up here.
However an ambitious new restaurant is set on changing that perception.
The latest furniture fetish from the masterminds behind Bed Supperclub is Long Table Restaurant. Perched 25 floors above downtown Bangkok, it overlooks Rachadapisek road. The newly-opened restaurant promises a dining experience like no other, and is already pulling in Bangkok's glitterati on a nightly basis. A mesmerizing, mirrored glass case filled with spotlights greets you at the front and leads you down the hardwood pathway into the restaurant. The sleek bar area is the a perfect spot to park yourself with a sexy cocktail, but for a real dazzling experience take your drink out onto the balcony for a breathtaking panorama of Bangkok's skyline.
In the dining room, naturally, it's the very long table that takes centre stage. As diners get to rub elbows with other patrons while seated around allegedly the longest restaurant dining table in existence. Taking Thai cuisine's communal element that extra step further, it accommodates no less than sixty patrons at once. If you luck out on a seat at the restaurant's namesake don't fret, cosy Japanese-style sofa booths line both sides of the central table, and offer more privacy. Booths have screens above them as well as under the tables displaying visual art, adding a stylish touch.
But enough talk about tables, and let's focus on what's going to be on it. The fusion menu keeps the authentic flavours intact (no Tom Yam Pizzas here) and instead raise the stakes with the ingredients, to inject new interest into Thai cuisine. Simple, classic dishes have been reinvented like the zesty winged bean salad with roasted duck breast and quail eggs.
Highlights from the main courses feature a couple of Isan favourites getting a classy reboot. The grilled Wagyu Sirloin is served medium-rare with onion rings and a spicy fish sauce, while a coriander-soy marinated lamb sirloin proves a worthy substitute for chicken, to go along with som tum and sticky rice. The meats are cooked to perfection, however many of the dishes tend to veer to the sweet side which sometimes overpowers the dishes. Diners with a sweet tooth can't miss out on ending your meal right, with a warm melting chocolate tart, served with vanilla sauce and a creamy scoop of macadamia ice cream.
