The face of BBC World’s Asia and World Business Report, Sharanjit Leyl has interviewed just about anyone- world leaders, celebrities, and even royals. Always immaculately turned out, it’s difficult to imagine this dynamo schlepping through padi fields to research rice prices. Intelligent and fiery, Leyl reports breaking financial news including the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Lifestyle gets an insight into a life less ordinary…

Who was your favourite interview with?

So many and very hard to pick! It would have to be my second interview with the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shaukat Aziz. He had invited us to his home in Islamabad, which was set in beautiful grounds. This was three years ago when Pakistan’s economy seemed to finally be performing. It’s sad to see how quickly it has all disintegrated.

What is the most bizarre interview you have conducted?

Lots and it wouldn’t be appropriate to name names for fear of libel but I was convinced one Hollywood director I had interviewed was high on drugs, though the excuse used was jet-lag.

What was your inspiration for participating in the Great Eastern Women 10K race this weekend?

I've taken part in other races like the Standard Chartered but have to admit I am more inspired when running a race specifically geared towards a woman's cause. It raises funds for cervical and breast cancer.

You have covered controversial financial scandals. Do you make many enemies as a result?

I wouldn't say I've made enemies. I think I have upset some people. Usually, it's local companies. It's a symptom of them being molly-coddled by local press who never really ask controversial questions. Many companies expect you to do flattering, fluffy stories, but we can't do that because we are the BBC. I have to give a balanced view. It's an odd source of pride for me if I've gotten under someone's skin. It means I've done my job.

Have you ever been intimidated by any personality?

Yes, when I first started in the business, I was just 24 and I'm sure I was intimidated by most CEOs and politicians. It may have been an Asian thing, I never felt comfortable taking on a confrontational tone. Now, I've done so many interviews, am a little older and I would like to think wiser, so I don't feel as intimidated.

What’s your prediction of global markets in the next six months?

If I could tell you that, I'd be making a fortune. Even the most seasoned experts are at a loss at the way markets are now behaving. No one even knows when it will bottom or if we've seen the worst.

The Great Eastern Women 10K is Sunday, 26 Oct, and benefits the Cervical Cancer prevention fund.
