Vaslav Nijinsky, the dance maverick of the legendary Ballet Russes, performed the Thai dance act, Danse Siamoise in the Paris Opera in the year 1910. Now after100 years celebrated Thai dancer Pichet Klunchun, will finally incarnate Danse Siamoise in Ninjinsky Siam. Nijinsky Siam would make its world premiere in the Singapore Arts Festival from 26th May to 27th May 2010.
It is a co-production between the Singapore Arts Festival, Theater der Welt 2010 and Théâtre de la Ville Paris, and is also co-presented by Zürcher Theater Spektakel and Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival Groningen.
After careful research, Pichet reconstructed the poses and movement for his performance based on archival photographs of Nijinsky from the past. His version will feature the original score of Danse Orientale by composer Christian Sinding from the year 1910.
Pichet brings Nijinsky back to life on stage by means of paintings, photographs and traditional huge puppets called ‘nang yai'. Between shadow and light, sound and silence, and the magical gap between East and West, life is re-imagined and its vitality celebrated.
