Philips Biotower

Grow food in the comfort of your home

The guys at Philips have outdone themselves with the the Philips Biotower. This towering biosphere is a self contained mini farm that will churn out a constant supply of greens and protein for your home.

From what we can make out of this design which is still in its conceptual phase, there are 5 levels to this contraption. Level one and two grows plants, perfect for growing herbs and a head of lettuce or two for impromptu salads. Optical fibers direct light to the different plants during the day and the methane gas captured from the organic waste powers the lights at night.

Level 3 contains a biomass of Algae probably for maintaining a healthy oxygen supply for the fish and shrimp that populate the lower level. The final bottom layer collects the organic waste generated and makes a good organic fertilizer for your plants.

No doubt this is a very clever and requires very little attention but whether it works out well depends on how this will smell in your home. Periodically removing the rotting compost of animal waste does not seem to pleasant either but if this is gonna help the enviroment then it may be worth all the effort. Oh yeah, if you have not already noticed, it looks totally awesome.
