How to give yourself a salon-worthy blowout at home

Let’s be honest: there’s nothing quite like getting a blowout at the salon.

A smooth, bouncy blowout styled perfectly is truly one of the best things in life. Unfortunately, anyone who’s tried to replicate the same sleek straightness or soft curls at home will know that  contrary to what your hairstylist tells (or shows) you, it’s no easy feat.

There are, after all, plenty of factors that go into nailing it, practice being the biggest. The good news, however, is that using the right products and tools can make the process much faster and infinitely less stressful.

Using a good heat protectant, for example, is already half the battle won. Besides sealing off hair cuticles to protect it against damage during the styling process, it’ll also nourish your hair to give you shiny, healthier-looking hair — ergo, a better blowout.

Your hair texture and type will determine what type of protectant to use, whether it’s cream, spray, or oil. As a rule of thumb, those with fine hair should steer clear of oil-based versions, and opt for lighter sprays instead. Conversely, those which thick, medium to coarse hair will find that heavier oils and creams are more effective.

A salon blowout at home is only as good as your tools, so investing in the right ones will save you time and money from visiting the salon before an event. If hand-eye coordination’s never been your thing, we’ve also included dummy-proof tools below that will get your hair sorted in half the time, alongside finishing products that will seal in your hard work while keeping it healthy.

Here, everything you’ll need to achieve a salon blowout at home.

Another product that keeps locks safe from extreme heat is this highly-concentrated restorative treatment, formulated with moringa and pomegranate seed oil to repair and hydrate hair while providing heat protection of up to 230°C. This weightless oil is suitable for all hair types and textures, and keeps your blowout frizz-free with plenty of shine.

Designed specifically for a gentle and comfortable blow-drying experience at home, this ergonomic hairbrush sees pre-curved boar bristles to give each of your sections an ideal grip from the get-go, so you don’t waste time fumbling around. To create soft waves, dry each section and then wrap it around the brush while directing heat from your dryer onto its barrel. Leave to cool for 30 seconds before gently unwinding the section.

Tip: The smaller the round brush, the tighter your wave or curl will be. Larger round brushes will give you bigger waves and more volume.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt here, it’s that humidity loves messing with a fresh blowout. This super lightweight finishing spray shields the hair from frizz on even the sultriest of days, ensuring that your hard work doesn’t go to waste. It’ll also set your style and add texture, so you get that slightly tousled woke-up-like-this look without needing sea salt spray.
