Why cactus water is the best ingredient for your skin, according to STARSKIN co-founder Nicole Arnoldussen

Don’t freak out – we’re not talking about putting prickly cacti on your face. What’s getting rave reviews from beauty experts right now is actually the water that comes from these cacti. You’ve probably already seen the huge surge in cactus water as a big name in skincare lately, but is this just another trendy fad that will go away in a few months’ time? Glamorous brands such as STARSKIN have entire product lines – like STARSKIN Orglamic – with cactus water as the main feature. We caught up with the co-founder of STARSKIN, Nicole Arnoldussen, to find out why her award-winning beauty products use this trendy ingredient.

What makes cactus water better for your skin than other ingredients/why is it different?

Loads of buzzy beauty ingredients make their way into skincare, each promising to deliver an otherworldly glow. But one is set to trump them all: the cactus. And, if you think about it, it makes perfect sense – cacti not only live, but they thrive in the harsh desert as they’re packed with nutrients and water to sustain them during long dry spells. So what’s all the fuss about? The water derived from the cactus not only has high concentrations of electrolytes to hydrate the skin, but it is also rich in antioxidants that help prevent UV damage.

Are there any other health benefits of cactus water?

When I’m feeling sluggish and hit that afternoon slump, I reach for cactus water. It is a great natural alternative to energy drinks as it is packed with electrolytes which not only hydrate but are also vital for healthy skin and hair. Plus, the antioxidants flush out any toxins from your system.

Is there a difference between cactus water and your brand’s ‘Pink’ cactus water?

Our Orglamic Pink Cactus collection is based on the Prickly Pear Cactus – the only cactus that has a blend of several antioxidants, vitamins, and electrolytes to protect the skin against sun damage, ageing, and collagen loss. The collection not only makes use of Prickly Pear Cactus water but also the fruit extracts and the seed oil. This precious oil is incredibly hydrating and loaded with Vitamin E (150% more than Argan Oil!), unsaturated fatty acids and contains more super antioxidants than any known plant. This is one of nature’s most powerful anti-aging oils for healthy, glowing skin. Lately, there has been a shift in thinking and a movement has developed to use all parts of a plant (as they each have unique benefits) so that nothing goes to waste. We’re definitely embracing this philosophy!

Why is this ingredient particularly important for people living in Bangkok?

When you live the city life, environmental factors like pollution can damage your skin’s moisture barrier. Cactus water (and its oil) has higher amounts of electrolytes and antioxidants to hydrate the skin. The oil even has antibacterial properties and is rich in essential fatty acids that work to lock in moisture. Our Pink Cactus 2-step oil sheet mask is also rich in Betalains to protect the skin against pollution.

Is using cactus water safe for the environment?

Our Prickly Pear Cactus is harvested from organic and eco-friendly sustainable farms in Mexico. At STARSKIN we aspire to develop products that are both glam and good – good for our customers and good for the environment.

One of our favourite products of yours is the Starskin Orglamic Toner. But we noticed that it has a kind of separated texture. What's up with that?

At the STARSKIN HQ we’re all about shaking up your beauty routine … literally! Besides the fact that our Pink Cactus Serum Mist looks pretty, is a bi-phase product – which essentially means we have combined two very different formula compositions into one. So, when shaken together these separate formulas combine to offer an extraordinary texture, experience, and result. Plus, our mist offers the convenience of multiple benefits in one product. Before you spritz, shake the mist well to mix up the nourishing super seed oils with the liquid cactus concentrate for an ultra-hydrating result. Spritz it on as an extraordinary makeup-setting and glow-enhancing spray, or when you need a mid-day hydration shot for instant radiance.

Do you have a personal favourite out of all your products?

One of the faves at the HQ is the Pink Cactus Pudding – I love it. If you’ve done some homework, you’ll know that loads of moisturisers out there are formulated with silicone. And don’t even get me started on the harsh chemicals and preservatives! These are the culprits that cause dehydrated skin, acne, and clogged pores. If you’re looking for a healthy all-day glow, look no further than our silky-smooth moisturiser.

We love that it's called a "pudding"! Why did you call it that?

The moisturiser itself is true to its name. It’s got a luscious, pudding-like texture that quickly transforms into a cool, fresh and lightweight finish that feels so luxurious. It’s formulated with highly nutritive Prickly Pear Cactus seed oil, thirst-quenching cactus extracts and smoothing Hyaluronic Acid for an addictive, long-lasting glow. You can use it as a day and a night cream. All you have to do is to apply it on a freshly cleansed face and neck for softer, smoother and suppler skin. It also creates the perfect canvas for your make-up. You could say it’s a pudding that doesn’t require counting calories!
