In the movies from past decades, the year 2020 had the unfortunate gift of having a cool and catchy double number. What this means is that whenever someone would predict something really cool happening in the future, they’d always say it would happen “by 2020”. If ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ got it right, we would have already faced and defeated a global alien threat. We should all be watching robots fight like gladiators right now, according to ‘Real Steel’.
It’s not just the movies — doctors, scientists, and politicians have also used the easy, visually appealing year of 2020 as a rough synonym for “sometime in the future”. Here we are, in 2020, and nobody has vacationed to the moon yet; we haven’t developed telepathy, and people still smoke.
But hey, success is the sum of many small efforts right? And the beginning of this new decade brings with it lots of little joys that — whilst not universe-altering — are still worthy of our excitement. Who wants to go on vacation to the moon anyway when a new Lizzie McGuire series is coming out on Disney+ right here on Earth? I don’t know about you, but I’m perfectly happy with the little human joys and achievements that are coming our way in 2020. So, here are ten things to look forward to that — thankfully — don’t involve alien wars or gladiator robots.

The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo
It’s pretty amazing that we still keep up a tradition that began all the way in Ancient Greece. And particularly in 2020, when the Olympic Games are being hosted in a city that seems a world away from Olympia, we can prepare to be truly amazed by how far we’ve come. Tech-savvy and culturally sophisticated, Tokyo is expected to make all our jaws drop with their newly built state-of-the-art Olympic Stadium and their modern technologies to go in it. There’ll also be some new additions to the games, such as the Japanese favourites: karate and baseball. Skateboarding and surfing will also be making a debut this year.
No more plastic bags from Bangkok supermarkets
2020 is going to be a great (well, better) year for the environment here in Bangkok. Major supermarkets from Villa to Tops have stopped giving out plastic bags in a move towards reducing waste and environmental toxins. It’s fabulous news for everyone; our shopping totes always looked way cuter anyway.
The opening of the Yahoo Time Capsule
In 2006, Yahoo invited people to store a bunch of digital artefacts from images, videos, and audio of life in that year. The capsule was handed to the Smithsonian museum in Washington D.C. for safekeeping, and is scheduled to be open in 2020 for Yahoo’s 25th birthday. This could be a nostalgic and poignant moment, or at least a burst of cat memes and amusing MySpace pictures sent from our past Internet Explorers.
The release of Playstation 5
Gamers, pack away your PS4s because there’s a new console coming to town.
Bangkok’s gig line-up
Not only do we have the British electropop group, Oh Wonder, coming to town to play some *free* gigs over at the bars in Chinatown later this January, we’re also playing host to Khalid and Green Day later on in 2020.
Don’t flip out — Motorola’s iconic Razr phone is returning in 2020 as a modern successor to one of the most iconic mobile phones ever released. After all the flat touch screens of iPhones and Galaxies, Motorola’s jumping back in the scene doing what they do best — the foldable phone. A touch screen flip-phone? Sounds very 2020.
Some great new TV
If last decade was the decade of streaming, this decade will be the decade of, well, even more streaming. With new streaming services from Disney+, HBO Max, and Peacock, we’ll be seeing some great shows appearing or re-appearing. Lizzie McGuire is getting a reboot on Disney+, while Better Call Saul, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Killing Eve, and The Handmaid’s Tale are all releasing new seasons this year. That should keep us occupied for a while.
Some great new movies
There’s No Time To Die this year – the new James Bond we’ve all been waiting for is finally coming in 2020.We’ll also be getting a new Mulan film, a Legally Blonde 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, and a To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel.
Some great new music
Take a deep breath: Selena Gomez, Lana Del Rey, Niall Horan, Sam Smith, Halsey, Tame Impala, The 1975, Cardi B, and Dua Lipa have all got new albums scheduled for dropping in 2020.
…And a bunch of Gatsby parties
We’re back in the 20s once again, and people everywhere are taking this as an opportunity to revisit one of the most celebrated decades in history. Get out your feathers, frills and ‘beautiful shirts’ because there’s going to be a lot of Roaring 20s parties that are bound to happen this year. Apart from the cliché and unoriginality, it’s hard to complain really.
