A cross between a croissant and a doughnut? There’s no wonder why dessert devotees are going crazy for the world-famed cronuts.
Cronuts were invented by the pastry wizard Dominique Ansel of Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City. The infamous pastry chef has turned cronuts amongst other things like the milk & cookie shot, flowering marshmallows, and magic soufflé, into a real sweet sensation — best evidenced by the long line in front of his bakery almost daily.
But since New York seems like a world away, getting your hands on the original cronut whenever the craving hits is just an impossible task. However, with a few Bangkok-based bakeries recreating the doughnut–croissant treat, city dwellers are now in for a real treat since we can pretty much enjoy cronuts anytime we’d like. If you’re not in the know already, here are the few best spots to get this butter-enriched, multi-layer confection in Bangkok.
First a denim jeans business, now a coffee shop, CPS is taking over Bangkok with fashion and food. And although the outlet is specialised in caffeinated beverages, CPS Coffee is now diving deep into the cronut business, adding chocolate-overloaded fried croissant dough into their baked good collection. The cronut is available in two flavours: Dirty Dark Chocolate and Vanilla Crème Caramel. To cap off or complement the coffee break, we suggest you go for either one (or both). Conveniently, you can now purchase the cronuts in all three of their locations: G Fl Central Festival Eastville, 1 Fl ICONSIAM and M Fl Terminal 21.
CPS Coffee, Terminal 21, M Fl, Soi Sukhumvit 19, Bangkok, +6663 494 4036; Open: Mon-Sun, 7 am-10 pm.
When it comes to a venue with a full-blown croissant business, we think Susan Croissant. The bakery dedicates its entire menu to the butter-loaded pastry. Expect to see all types of mouth-walloping desserts made from croissant dough. Of course, the Frido (aka, the cronut) is also included in their sweet repertoire. Love sweet and savoury? By all means, opt for the Mushroom Cream & Bacon (THB 159), or the Three Cheeses (THB 129) which comes crowned with a crunchy cheese crisp. The Lemon Cream & Crumble Frido (THB 129) is also a wonderful combo of sweet and tangy flavours you’ll enjoy.
Susan Croissant, 384/1 Ekkamai 24 Alley, Bangkok, +6662 293 6464; Open: Mon-Sun, 7 am-6 pm.
