It’s a proud moment for anyone who knows and loves this iconic bar.

Last Friday, the full list for the World’s 50 Best Bars 2020 was unveiled, crowning a London bar as the number one in the world, and a Bangkok bar at an impressively high spot, too.

Following what was already an exciting week, as we saw Vesper listed at No. 62 and Rabbit Hole listed at No. 76, it seems like Thailand’s bars are finally getting the world’s attention, and the acclaim that they deserve. We now boast 3 renowned bars on the World’s 100 Best list, after previously only having one, and that too not within the Top 50. It seems like things are looking up — and East.

The World’s 50 Best Bars 2020: big winners

The biggest winner of the night was London’s Connaught Bar, which took home the No. 1 spot this year. It is followed by New York’s Dante and The Clumsies in Athens. For Asia, Singapore’s Atlas ranked as the best bar in the region, coming in at a really impressive No. 4 ranking. Hong Kong’s Coa took over the No. 8 spot (and also won the Highest Climber Award by rising a whopping 41 places from last year), whilst Singapore’s Jigger & Pony and Tokyo’s The SG Club close up the Top 10 at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively.

All in all, the 2020 list features bars from 23 counties, with 11 new entries spread across Australia, Colombia, Greater China, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain, the UK, and Thailand. Europe saw the most entries on the list with 21 bars, followed by Asia with 15 bars, North and South America with 10 bars, Australia (3 bars), and the Middle East (1 bar).

But back to what we care about most: Bangkok.

The Bangkok bar that made it

The Bamboo Bar within the Mandarin Oriental was ranked as No. 35 on the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars for 2020, jumping an impressive 19 spots from their position last year at No. 54. This means that for 2020, the beloved hotel bar has officially made it into the Top 50 — a really impressive and commendable feat.

Long an iconic name for locals and visiting guests alike, The Bamboo Bar at the Mandarin Oriental is one of the city’s most famous, most historic, and most celebrated jazz bars. As iconic as the location that it sits within, the menu here combines classics with local Thai twists, with live music and a timeless ambience to suit. It’s no wonder that it is getting more recognition as the years pass by, as an evening at The Bamboo Bar has really become a must-visit destination for anyone in Bangkok.

We would have loved to see our local teams celebrating at the ceremony abroad, but given the global pandemic and its limitations, it was only a virtual celebration for the World’s 50 Best Bars unveil this year.
