One of the many things we love about Bangkok is that the city is never lacking of new speakeasies and trendy bars to check out. Whether you’re looking for the perfect ambience for a sundowner, a good old American-style cocktail or a jazz bar with unconventional alcoholic creations, here’s a list of our new favourites this month.
Decked out in brick, dark wood, and black iron, The 88 has retained the former shophouse Smokin’ Pug’s character and transformed into an American-style bar serving classic cocktails. Designed by New Yorker Eric Stephenson, the drink menu is divided into different categories, depending on the drink’s flavour profile, including nontraditional sours, carbonated tropical and aromatised cocktails. Looking for something that reminds you of a beach vacation? Try their Hotel Nacional Special, featuring Caribbean white rum, apricot, bitter vanilla, pineapple, lime, and bitter vanilla (THB 360). For a stronger kick, we recommend the bar’s spirit-forward signature, Yacht Club, which combines aged Venezuelan rum, house-blended vermouth, apricot liqueur with a hint of Angostura bitters (THB 400).

Sky on 20
Located on the top floor of Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20 Hotel, Sky on 20 boasts laidback garden vibes and panoramic views of the city, making it the perfect place for a sundowner (starting from a very friendly THB 250). While their signature Hennessy- and Belvedere-based cocktails are hard to resist, we also recommend the rooftop bar’s version of the classics, such as the Apple and Vanilla Margarita, Ginger Mojito, Coconut Daiquiri and Bramble, just to name a few. With happy hours starting from 5pm until 7pm, this is the place to wind down after a long day at work.

ABar and ABar Rooftop
A chic, sophisticated bar on the rooftop of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, ABar offers one of the largest selections of gins in the city. While the open-air terrace looking out to Sukhumvit’s glittering skyscrapers may be the main eye-catcher, the bar’s premium dark spirits-focused drinks are just as impressive. We especially love the Study in Stone, a sour made with Nusa Cana rum, dry sherry, citrus oleo saccharum and lemon, topped with fresh berries (THB 415). For gin lovers, a must-try would be the Botanist Fashioned, made with aged Beefeater gin and homemade coffee-vanilla syrup, garnished with dehydrated orange (THB 365).

Nestled inside the elegantly rustic Mediterranean restaurant Harvest, The Woodshed is the latest hangout for jazz enthusiasts and those looking for some serious craft spirits. With a live trio playing on Fridays and a New Orleans-style pianist on Mondays, this atmospheric bar offers a cosy setting for you to sip away and enjoy some unconventional cocktails, such as the Gintochoke, made with pickled artichoke and its briny juice, Whitley Neil gin and dry vermouth (THB 365). For a more robust flavour, try the Smoke Lingers, the bar’s special creation with Laphroaig 10 years, Ocho Tequila, single espresso, and housemade coffee syrup, topped with burnt walnut (THB 450).

Bangkok hass no lack of rooftop bars, it’s true, but the Park Hyatt Bangkok’s latest rooftop addition offers not only a stunning lookout to Bangkok’s central business district, but also an exclusive cocktail menu with four sophisticated cocktails, without the sky-high prices. We’re most impressed with the Paloma, Penthouse’s Oriental twist with pomelo and oolong tea syrup combined with Patron Silver tequila. If you’re looking for something outside of the rooftop bar menu, you’re free to order from Penthouse Bar + Grill downstairs, too.
