The cold white mist that lingers over the far north of Westeros isn’t the only thing that inspired Johnnie Walker’s most intriguing collaboration to date — so did its dwellers, the White Walkers.
Also known as the Others in the HBO Television series Game of Thrones, the enigmatic and feared creatures lent their signature style to the iconic bottle, rendering the liquid in a frosted bottle sleeve. Fittingly, the White Walker by Johnnie Walker whisky is meant to be served freezing cold, and hidden designs are revealed on the bottle when exposed to chilly temperatures thanks to thermochromic pigmented ink — an ode to the glowing icy stare of the show’s undead.
Here, Blender George Harper and a small team of expert blenders invite fans to step into the ‘Frozen North’ with single malts from Cardhu and Clynelish, the latter of which is not coincidentally, one of Scotland’s most Northern distilleries. “Whiskies from Clynelish have endured long, Scottish Winters, not dissimilar to the long periods endured by the Night’s Watch who have ventured north of the wall – so it was the perfect place to start when creating this unique whisky,” said Harper.
Expect notes of caramelised sugar and vanilla, as well as fresh red berries with a hint of orchard fruit within this delightfully complex expression.
As part of a wider partnership with HBO and Diageo, the White Walker by Johnnie Walker will join eight Scotches that are paired with the iconic Houses of Westeros and the Night’s Watch in the Game of Thrones Single Malt Scotch Whisky Collection. This is perhaps the closest George R.R. Martin’s legion of fans will get to an authentic taste of the mystical Seven Kingdoms and beyond.
“We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whisky and once we saw the vision from Johnnie Walker for a way to collaborate we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now. From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with White Walker by Johnnie Walker. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping this delicious whisky as they wait for season eight and beyond,” said Harper.
Winter might be coming, but there couldn’t be a better way to raise a toast to the freezing cold.
