Welcome to the 21st century, Kombi.
Dubbed the ID Buzz, this bus will be a production model based on the concept of the same name presented by Volkswagen in 2017. The German carmaker also promises an unprecedented level of autonomy.
Directly inspired by the firm’s famous “Kombi” bus, the all-electric ID Buzz will be the first vehicle from the Volkswagen Group to allow genuinely autonomous driving. To achieve this, Volkswagen will notably draw on technology from Argo AI, a self-driving start-up in which both Volkswagen and Ford have invested.
And since the self-driving system from Argo AI promises genuinely autonomous journeys, this should allow Volkswagen to add ID Buzz vehicles to its shared fleet — exclusively comprising electric vehicles — available in Europe, North America and Asia, by 2025.
The ID Buzz will be based on the modular MEB platform used for the group’s electric vehicles. It is expected to feature two electric motors and various sensors around and on top of the vehicle, as well as rear-view cameras replacing mirrors. The vehicle will be able to seat up to eight passengers.
The original “Kombi” bus was produced from 1947 to 2014, and a special 70th anniversary edition was also sold in Germany in 2017. Production of the ID Buzz is scheduled to start by the end of 2022.
