Is lipstick still relevant even when we’re wearing masks and we’re living amidst a pandemic?

The short answer, according to Huda Kattan, is yes.

There’s a meme of the Huda Beauty founder floating around the internet that’s familiar to all makeup fanatics out there — it’s her painstakingly putting the perfecting touches to her lip makeup, and the caption reads: “What shade is your lipstick? It’s not that simple.”

Her lipstick routine – in addition to the rest of her makeup – is never just as simple as it looks, but it begs the question in our current masking situation: is lipstick still relevant? Do we still need to put it on, even though we’ll be spending most of our time with our face half covered? Who would see it, anyway?

For burning questions such as these, who better to answer than Kattan herself. As the founder of Huda Beauty and her new skincare brand Wishful, we chat with her on the relevance of lipstick and what we need to get excited about in Spring makeup and skincare products from her brands.

Let’s talk about wearing lipstick during the pandemic. Now that we have to wear masks basically all the time, do you find that lipstick is still as relevant as before?

Absolutely! Lipstick is more of a feeling than anything. We always say the men may have a power suit, but we have a power lip; There is nothing more powerful than a confident woman with bold lipstick. If I have a zoom meeting coming up and the rest of my face is bare, sometimes throwing on a bright-coloured lipstick just makes me look a little more alive and confident. I’ve seen a lot of people who are working from home, reach for bold lip colours to spruce up their look a bit.

A lip gloss probably isn’t the best kind of lip product to wear under a mask. In your opinion, what type of lip product would be best to wear under a mask?

Hydrating lip balms, like our Silk Balm, or lip masks are great! They help nourish the lips under the mask so you’re hydrating while hiding.

Can you give us a few tips on how to make your lipstick transfer-proof under a mask?

For lipstick, you really have to buy long-lasting or transfer-proof formulas – like our Liquid Matte lipsticks. I don’t really suggest putting setting sprays or anything else on your lips to get a long-lasting effect.

What products should we be excited to look out for from Huda Beauty this Spring season?

We just launched our very first brow product, #BombBrows, which is one of our biggest launches this year. It’s a microblade brow pencil that has the smallest tip on the market, giving you hair-like strokes that look so natural it’s unbelievable. There is still so much more to come, but you’ve got to try this if you haven’t already.

What are your personal favourite products from Wishful and why?
Wishful Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub.

Yo Glow Enzyme Scrub! I think everyone would agree with me on this one too. It very effectively removes the dead skin and dirt that builds up over time, which can prevent your foundation from going on smoothly. We launched Wishful with just Yo Glow about a year ago and it’s already won an award, it’s that good. A lot of people thought it was very strange that I was launching my skincare line with a single scrub but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Wishful is meant to give you the perfect foundation for a flawless makeup application.

Huda Beauty and Wishful are available at Sephora stores, online, and Sephora in-app.
