Buoyant and bright, Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2022 show is a roller coaster ride through the decades

At the Grand Palais Éphémère, Chanel’s latest runway set is visually pared back compared to the elaborate sets from previous shows. But unlike last year’s almost virtual stage, the atmosphere has never been more energetic.

With throngs of photographers lined up on the edges of the raised runway, it’s a familiar sight, and almost déjà vu for Virginie Viard as she pays homage to photographers and the runway shows of the past. “I used to love the sound of flashbulbs going off at the shows in the eighties when the models were on a raised runway,” she says. “I wanted to recapture that emotion.

Drawing back the crowds

Against a backdrop of model Vivienne Rohner with a camera in hand, models strutted, skipped, and twirled in front of the cameras. They were all smiles, exuding a playfulness that was a huge departure from the more commonly seen stoic demeanours on the runways. Embracing the fun in fashion, Chanel is bringing a pandemic-ridden world back to full-scale enthusiasm with some pizazz and personality.

The looks

True to Viard’s inspiration, she packages the most upbeat trends of each decade into a unified collection of throwback #hotgirlsummer looks. You’ll see anything from tank bikinis in your typical Chanel colour schemes to sequined skirts, shift dresses, jacquard co-ords, and crop tops styled with whale-tail bottoms.

The finale

As the show continues, the models close the show with the collection’s most colourful pieces, sashaying down in butterfly-printed draped dresses. Want more of the show’s most colourful pieces? Get in touch with Chanel’s LINE Official to view the full selection.
