Holiday month is officially upon us. As always, we have rounded up the must-have sneakers for the season, just in time to be added on to last-minute Christmas wishlists. This time, cop a covetable series of new drops in honour of special anniversaries, the relaunch of a most-coveted sneaker, a crystal-encrusted adaptation of the classic Jordans, and more. Sharp-eyed sneakerheads will have spied this hotly-anticipated Air Jordan 1 rendition by Columbian artist J Balvin during his Super Bowl halftime show this year. The Jordan franchise’s first collaboration with a Latin personality, ‘Colores y Vibras’ is named after Balvin’s last two albums (‘Vibras’ in 2018 and ‘Colores’ in 2020) and instantly stands out from its muted three-toned predecessors with an electric-bright, rainbow canvassed upper and pastel pink rubber outsoles. Tactile trims narrate the artist’s creative energy in jagged, pointed edges which frame the pair’s front and back, including the Swoosh, and is countered by the rounded, cloud-like wings at the collar. As a pair designed to honour creative self-expression, moments of personalisation are also aplenty — circular velcro patches in different graphics including a ‘Jumpman’ logo, a basketball, and J Balvin’s signature smiley can be easily interchangeable, as are the laces in three colours of pink, black or white.
For the unfortunate many who missed the first drop of the Yeezy 350 V2 ‘Bred’ in 2017, the long-awaited opportunity of snagging a pair without shelling out the hefty US$1,000 price tag, which it has maintained ever since, has arrived. As we inch closer to the 5 December restock, whispers around the sneaker community say that over half a million pairs will be released. Like its first debut, the pair is constructed in a black Primeknit upper with Boost technology, with the ‘SPLY-350’ slogan striped across the side panel in red. The Yeezy Boost 250 V2 ‘Bred’ will be available in full family sizing.
In the world of covetable sneaker drops, 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the Air Jordan 11 Retro since its original release in 1995. Still keeping in tradition with the monochromatic mesh and black patent leather colourway that launches each year in a holiday capsule collection, the Jubilee anniversary pair aptly celebrates the milestone with glimmering moments of silver — acute attention to details are a defining feature of the Air Jordan 11. Spot the silver 3D ‘Jumpman’ logo, silver-toned eyelets that spell out ‘Jordan,’ and a numeral ‘23’ on the heel tab. Full family sizing will be available for this pair should you desire to match with the whole brood.
Little less will propel the hype of a new launch like an endorsement from Lebron James himself or with an obscenely large amount of Swarovski crystals. Nike’s new Dunk Low in ‘Pure Platinum’ created in collaboration with Cynthia Lu’s online retail Cactus Plant Flea Market (CPFM) is exactly both of that. The suede pair is covered in silver-toned crystals from heel to toe and sports an oversized Swoosh, extra-padded tongue, and CPFM’s signature smiley tag. A pair that already has NBA royalty’s stamp of approval is a pair all basketball and sneaker fiends should definitely have.
2007 was Ronnie Fieg’s first encounter with Asics’s Gel-Lyte 3 which he oversaw a design overhaul of the brand’s iconic trainers in three colour variations, thus beginning his storied partnership with Asics. Now the Gel-Lyte 3 is celebrating its third decade since its release with the launch of a collection named ‘The Palette’ created with Fieg — a chapter worth bookmarking in the two’s collaborative history. The 30-piece collection features the Gel-Lyte 3 in 30 unique shades taken from Kith’s most-used colours throughout the brand’s 9-year timeline. Fully tonal except for its contrasting coloured sole and debossed logo on either side of the panels, this pair will have a colourway for any event of any day, of the month that is.
The date was June 11, 1997. An ailing Michael Jordan played an unbelievable game against the Utah Jazz; scoring 38 points out of the Chicago Bulls’ 90-point win, thereby known henceforth as the ‘Flu Game’ (while ‘Hangover Game’ or ‘Food Poisoning Game’ may probably be more accurate). On the court, Jordan stands in the original blueprint: black upper atop bright red outsoles. This holiday season in full family sizing, the Jordan 12 ‘Reverse Flu Game’ sneakers will upend the original: red suede on top, black along the mudguards and outsoles.
Clean. That’s the word to describe this pair. Stripping back Air Jordan 1 High Zoom CMFT’s colourway (from which a previous genesis includes royal cobalt blues), this ‘Summit Sail’ pair goes for a less-is-more presentation. Rendered in a toned-down palette that only touches upon neutrals, light beiges and white with hints of black carried along the laces, Swooshes and tongue flaps, this pair is one of the most versatile seen on this season’s roster yet.
In honour of (Red)’s ongoing work against HIV, AIDS and, more recently, the coronavirus pandemic, these Louis Vuitton sneakers are cast in the charity’s signature crimson colourway and branded with the luxury house’s monogram on a leather hang-tag attached to the laces. For each pair sold, US$200 will be donated to (Red)’s Global Fund. This sophomore collaboration is set to release on 1 December, 2020: World Aids Day.
Coming hot on the heels of Stüssy’s prior Nike collaboration (which saw the Spiridon Cage 2 sneakers’ value skyrocketing across resale sites), this season’s collaboration redesigns the sportswear giant’s streetwear stalwarts: the Air Force 1 Lows. Eschewing a smooth leather upper for fully-biodegradable hemp, this revamp also comes with tonal, matching laces in colourways that range from a neutral-beige ‘Fossil Stone’ and classic black.
From California’s SkateLove to Berlin-based Civilist, Nike’s SB series is a love letter to grassroots, on-the-ground skate scenes. The very first collaboration to land from the Middle East, this collaboration with Dubai’s Frame Skate shop celebrates all things love; ‘Habibi’ translates to ‘my love’, after all. A pixelated flash game — following the adventures of Falco or Pearl skateboarding in the face of obstacles like road blocks and rails — sets the scene for a raffle for residents of the United Arab Emirates.
