As we all know, this May has been a particularly special month for Thailand. The coronation of His Majesty King Rama X at the beginning of the month was one of the grandest national celebrations in modern history. And the splendour and joy of the event continues to resound throughout the country. From a style point of view, this national pride is pretty obvious. This month, Thailand has turned a radiant shade of yellow. Whether in a mustard Polo, a gold dress, or some pastel linen, everybody’s wearing the colour in celebration of the new King. Also symbolising happiness, optimism, and prosperity, this hue is bringing the country together in a time of national pride and rejoicing. So, for this month’s edition of Lifestyle Asia’s Best Dressed in Bangkok, we’ve decided to celebrate one of the most important months in Thailand with a special ‘Yellow’ edition. Here are our favourite looks that featured the bright and cheerful colour in honour of this May’s auspicious royal occasion.
In actual royal yellow regalia, H.R.H Princess Sirivannavari tops our best dressed list for the second time this year. Her Highness’ stunning royal ensembles featured traditional Thai silks in shimmering gold embroidery and pastel yellows. Her beautiful outfits (and the charisma to go with them) played a big part in the sentiments and high spirits of the occasion. Being all smiles and selfies, the Instagram-savvy Princess and her multiple outfits across the three-day coronation attracted several millions of likes on social media. Well and truly a national pride, our Princess is just the coolest depiction of fashion royalty.
This month also sent Bangkokians to the famously glamorous Cannes Film Festival. Even thousands of miles away, our homegrown movie stars still showed connection to the festivities back here. Thai smiles continued all the way to the South of France, courtesy of the one and only Araya Hargate. The actress wore an elegant lime yellow dress by Jean Paul Gaultier while attending the glitzy film festival in the South of France, taking a bit of Thai celebration with her. Few people could pull off this colour quite as winningly as Hargate: the romantic drape texture, exaggerated off-shoulder sleeves, and the show-stopping Chopard collar necklace had her looking positively statue-esque.
Caught on a recent episode of Tee Tai Krua (in which celebrities host home-cooked dinners for each other), Cindy had us falling in love with her top-to-toe yellow look. Sure, her rakish build makes everything she wears look elegantly louche and relaxed, but this splash of bright and creamy yellow gives the loose tailoring an extra kick of playful energy. We love that the long, silky trench coat with ribbon cuffs comes with matching trousers but, of course, you’d need the legs of Cindy Bishop to wear such an ensemble. Regrettably, ‘Best Dressed’ isn’t necessarily fair.
The dapper Bangkok fashion stylist never fails to make a striking impression at fashionable parties. Now it turns out that he’s just as impeccably styled when simply lying around in bed. Well, he is promoting the new luxury Philip B hair products here but still — this guy can dress up and down like no other. Oversized rib-knit sweaters with mustard cotton cargos — his unexpected but infinitely successful combinations are the whole reason why he’s one of the city’s best dressed of all style experts.
With such a refreshing youthful face and gentle demeanour, Fluke seems as though yellow was invented for him. The model has been particularly enthusiastic with the colour this month, sporting a spectrum ranging from the safety yellow jacket by up-and-coming menswear label apiece, to a neon yellow puffer coat from Six P.M. However, it was this pastel yellow cotton-suede jacket he wore to celebrate Another Story’s LGBT Rainbow collection that stole our hearts this month. The playful shade and suave tailoring is a charming combination that’s got us swooning. Or is it the adorable I <3 GIRLS T-Shirt layered underneath?
