Cannes 2019: Why Thai celebrities won the red carpet looks

Once a year, film stars from all over the world gather together in the south of France to celebrate cinematic achievement and party into the early hours. The Cannes Film Festival is a glamourous affair to be sure, but what grabbed our attention most this year were the impressive appearances from our homegrown talent. Few other European film festivals have featured this many Thai celebrities. But after seeing just how much we brought to the red carpet at Cannes 2019, we have a feeling that that’s all about to change.

With so many A-listers dressed head-to-toe in extravagance, it’s definitely hard to stand out. But our Thai actresses rose to the challenge and didn’t disappoint. True, we had some of the grandest, sexiest, and even most traditional red carpet gowns (Asava’s gorgeous Thai silk creations made special appearances). Yet, what Cannes was most graced by was what Thais do best – charm. Whatever the Thai stars wore at Cannes 2019 won our hearts all the more when accompanied by big smiles on the red carpet, touching moments of solidarity, and even their kids also dressed to the nines. All in all, they brought looks with real heart and character.

Here, see all the looks that Thai celebrities wore at Cannes 2019.

Sririta Jensen

Sririta Jensen’s first Cannes outing was emblazoned with a red ruffle gown for a bold yet classy look.

Her ruffled flames then got so hot they turned purple – and even more eye-catching. The butterfly wing shoulders are an impressive statement look, fit for a fairy princess.

For the Vanity Fair Festival de Cannes party, Jensen made sure to continue standing out with a shiny metallic net dress and decadent black feather cuffs. Needless to say, she looks ready to party with the likes of Brad Pitt and Victoria Secret models.

Praya Lundberg

After showing off her figure in this fierce red safety-pin dress to the Rocket Man movie premiere, Lundberg received a note from her Versace team that read “You killed everybody!” We can definitely vouch for that.

Lundberg then gave us much to talk about with her glittery Rene Caovilla gown that was definitely some kind of magic. A cross between mermaid, swan, and greek goddess, this look seemed to combine everything that was beautiful in the world.

Min Peechaya Wattanamontree

Min looks like a fairytale princess in this stunning and heavy-looking white embroidered gown, complete with a high neck and cape. It’s proof that there’s no need to bare excessive flesh or wear skin-tight dresses to draw attention. Class and confidence will never go out of style.

Nervous for her first ever Cannes red carpet appearance, Min finds support and encouragement from fellow Thai star Praya Lundberg who tells her to just “Smile honey!”. We love this special moment of solidarity.

Chompoo Araya Hargate

The Thai celebrity with the most appearances at Cannes, Araya Hargate had over 5 red carpet outfits. There was no warm up though – she went straight to business with this jaw-dropping Ralph and Russo ruffle toile ballgown on the first day.

Hargate’s second look continues to school everyone else at Cannes, with a strapless sheer Versace dress in the prettiest pastel shades. Decked out with Chopard jewels, Hargate makes even the most delicate of dresses look tough and fierce.

Effortlessly beautiful, Hargate’s inimitable style always oozes that “I woke up like this” vibe. If only we could all look this good just lounging around in a hotel room.

It’s always refreshing to see celebrities actually having fun on the red carpet, and Hargate’s radiant smile reminds everyone that this is an event for artistic celebration – not a pout-filled catwalk. Nevertheless, her look in this red Jean Paul Gaultier gown would do just fine on a runway.

It’s clear that Araya Hargate ruled over Cannes 2019. More than anyone else, Hargate makes these glamourous events and red carpet outings look easy breezy.

Hargate seems to have so much style to go round, even her two young sons were some of the most dapperly dressed men at Cannes.

Sara Legge

Part of team #PHxAsava – a collaboration between Asava and Piper Heidsieck at Cannes – Sara Legge brought a bit of Thailand with her to the south of France. Dressed up by Polpat Asavaprapha himself, Legge warmed our patriotic hearts with a most gorgeous pink and orange Thai silk gown. Honestly, Thai silk should be featured on red carpets all the time.

Yoghurt Nattasha Bunprachom

Along with Sara Legge and Polpat, Nattasha (a previous winner of our Best Dressed in Bangkok list) was a pride and joy for us at Cannes. Her elegant figure teamed up with Asava’s yellow drape Thai silk skirt and a black halter-neck top, together creating a classic look of Thai beauty to show off to the world at Cannes.
