The term ‘hippie’ was one of the most remarkable buzzwords during the ’60s, defining someone who lived a countercultural lifestyle to oppose all the traditional belief systems that sought to limit them politically, socially and spiritually.
For the Spring/ Summer 2019 collection, Chloé’s new creative director – Natacha Ramsay-Levi – draws inspiration from her journey to Ibiza and Morocco, two places she felt exuded a dizzying diversity that she described as a form of ‘hippie modernism’ which has grown in our new-age era. By fusing the bohemian spirit with contemporary styles, the designer reimagined the conceptual term into an avant-garde collection, embracing free-spirited femininity and classic sensuality in all its entirety.
At its latest fashion show, Chloé showcased vintage textures and fabrics including breezy silk, carpet jacquard, and laddered linen, all weaved into asymmetric silhouettes like bias-cut layering and pareo designs. While the flou skirts and flared trousers were spotted with twisted lariat belts and handkerchief hems, the dresses were romantic and goddess-like, cascading with delicate pleats, shell embroideries, and voluminous tiers.
The runway was also imbued with sunset shades of terracotta orange and sky blue, which simply evoked colourful vibes for the evening hours. Along with the ombré hues came the symbolic illustrations of raised hands that depicted female freedom and individualism.
Despite its consistently sophisticated approach to bohemian, jet-set designs in the collection, Chlóe managed to surprise us with its fresh take on the accessories while still maintaining the brand’s signature styles. As for handbags, in particular, the luxury fashion house gave its popular Tess Bag a material update, resulting in a plush airbrush suede, as well as introducing its ‘C’ Bag with square shape and intricate patchworks. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Miracle bags launch, the iconic bags were gracefully crafted from the shiny croc-embossed leather, too.
Even if you’ve yet to escape to the beach or island for a holiday retreat, this hippie-inspired collection from Chlóe can easily usher some summertime cheer into your daily wardrobe, ultimately brightening your looks and days whenever the skies in Bangkok turn grey.
