COS, a fashion label known for their pared-down colour scheme and boxy silhouettes, is having a moment.
It’s quite easy to spot a COS wearer. Whether man or woman, they’re the ones in an oversized grey coat, or a tailored high-neck sweater (probably in burgundy). With such a distinctive brand identity and a stubbornly brutalist approach in their iconic minimalist fashion, COS is clearly a brand that thinks for itself.
Before, we might have perceived COS as too plain, too boring. Their sharp yet oversized tailoring makes accessorising a tricky task, while their simple colour palette is definitely not for attention-grabbing. But now, the brand’s turning the heads of millennials with exactly those traits. Whilst taking inspiration from architecture, sculptural art, and the tranquility of nature; the upcoming COS AW19 collection remains rebellious against the current “more is more” culture. Their signature exaggerated proportions fit perfectly into the new generation’s androgynous trend. Meanwhile, their muted colours recall the slick, laidback, effortlessly cool streetwear of modern fashion.
Next month, COS will be releasing their Autumn/Winter 2019 collection in stores. The upcoming collection combines two key concepts: the strong lines of monumental architecture and the tranquil mood of nature. But while bringing the manmade and the natural worlds together as one, the collection also blurs the lines between genders. Every one of its pieces is unisex, while the earthy colour palette and voluminous proportions allow for chic androgynous looks. With a collection that blends nature and artifice, men and women, COS seems to be offering us a peaceful and uncomplicated world. What could be more desirable than that? COS AW19 is set to be the brand’s most relevant and successful collection to date. Here, we explore a few looks that we’ll definitely be reaching for when they land.

In the COS AW19 collection, the structure of modern architecture comes together with natural tones and earthy colour palettes. We see voluminous proportions and striking scales creating bold and sculptural silhouettes. But even though the pieces seem sturdy and strictly tailored, they still retain a relaxed look and feel.
Often, the pieces appear uncomplicated and exposed in an outwardly-facing simplicity, emphasising a single bold feature. This could be an angular shoulder or an asymmetric hemline.
Industrial greys are softened with shades of oatmeal and stone. The winter colour palette is also warmed with shades of plum and deep rust.
There’s an intense focus on shape in this collection. Necklines are adjustable, hems can be lengthened or lifted, and waistbands can be straightened or more defined. The padded outerwear performs a double function: their removable sections can form alternative silhouettes, and they all offer cocoon-like protection from the Autumn/Winter elements.
The accessories are also not to be missed. COS completely reimagines what jewellery can be. Their clip-on earrings and necklaces play with rounded volumes in stony colours. Meanwhile, their bags are textured with padded and perforated surfaces that just beg to be held. Far from “feminine”, or “glamourous”, these accessories aren’t so much for decoration as for nailing down the structure of the outfit – like bolts in a building.
COS AW19 is a collection with contrasting forms and sensual richness, firm structure and soft fluidity. Stay tuned for its release in stores at the end of July.
