Check and mate for the latest fashion trend.

Did you get the memo? It’s the beginning of the autumn season and it’s time to reorganise our wardrobes. Whether it’s small touches or a complete outfit, check prints have got their way out in becoming an essential this season. As we saw designers flaunting this print during the last runway shows, we’ve rounded up a few ways you could rock the checks this season.

Go minimalist

Checks does not necessarily mean lumberjack — which is also still on-trend, by the way. On the contrary, this winter the print goes ultra elegant in a tiny version for a refined, minimalist look. Dress, blouse, shirt, skirt, jacket or coat: every piece of a wardrobe gets the treatment for the possibility of switching it up between looks that are all checks from head to toe and those mixed with other prints. This season, checks are hot in autumnal tones or neutrals (beige, gray, white, brown) or light shades (blue or violet). A trend seen at Chloé, Givenchy and Lacoste.

Make some statements

For the more daring, checks can also be worn in an XXL version with touches of bright colours for a bold look.  Essentials of women’s wardrobes remain the anchor of such looks from dresses to long coats and pantsuits.  Stella McCartney is one of the labels that made tile prints the signature print of the season, offering it in oversized black and white and black and red versions, while Dior chose to do checks in a kind of blurred, almost hypnotic fashion.

The classic tartan look

To make your look cozy or give it a retro element, there’s always Scottish tartan prints, also seen on several runways for this season. A must-have that will win over the most discreet fashion addicts who don’t want to miss out on the seasonal trend. It showed up in classic colours at Burberry, in a neutral and dark palette at Michael Kors, and a more colorful range at Miu Miu, which played the vintage card.

After summer’s floral and tie-dye prints, it’s checks that will be seen on the stylish this fall, with various shapes and forms to suit nearly every style. Accessories aren’t being left out either, with bags, shoes and hats all showing up in the famous prints.
