Karl x Kaia is happening, best dressed of MTV VMAs, and more fashion news

Last week, headlines were flurried with everything Crazy Rich Asians-related, and while we’re not complaining, the controversial yet groundbreaking flick’s Singapore grand premiere wasn’t all that happened. Here, from the eyebrow-raising Karl x Kaia project to the MTV VMAs best-dressed newbies, catch up on everything you shouldn’t miss from the fashion sphere, as seen on the ’gram.

Not too long after Karl Lagerfeld’s disturbing #MeToo comment, the Karl x Kaia capsule is dropping

What happens when model-of-the-moment teams up with fashion’s almost-god? Nowadays, the answer to that is a fashion collaboration. Enter: Karl x Kaia. Though Karl Lagerfeld’s controversial #MeToo comment wasn’t too far back — his alarming stance against models who “don’t want [her] pants pulled about” was told in an interview to Numéro in April and caused a massive furore — his namesake’s partnership with Kaia Gerber, Chanel runway frequenter and Lagerfeld’s muse, had been a long time coming, announced earlier this year in January.

Now coming to fruition, the company’s largest collaborative project to date reveals a day-to-night, Paris-to-LA sartorial narrative, threading pieces like wetsuit-inspired bodysuits, logo hoodies, biker jackets and double-breasted tuxedos in monochrome. The capsule is set to launch on 30 August online, via Karl Lagerfeld’s e-shop and Revolve, for two weeks. The products will then drop to other international e-tailers.

The Crazy Rich Asians cast hit the jade carpet for its Singapore premiere

On Tuesday night last week, a day before Crazy Rich Asians movie opened islandwide, a large part of the cast — sans its female leads Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh and Awkafina — gathered to hit the premiere’s jade carpet dressed to the crazy nines. Outfit highlights included Henry Golding’s aptly exquisite brocade jacquard Tom Ford blazer and Victoria Loke’s understated glitter-speckled Dolce & Gabbana gown.

Studio Ghibli released Totoro and Ponyo-themed merch

Mega anime studio Studio Ghibli’s icon status is unparalleled. For years, it released Hayao Miyazaki’s most defining works which quickly became pop culture staples beyond Japan’s borders. Last week, to celebrate two of its pivotal films’ anniversaries — My Neighbour Totoro, which was debuted 30 years ago and Ponyo, which premiered in 2008 — Studio Ghibli released a limited selection of merch.

In true Sukajan souvenir jacket style, the studio’s fashion label GBL designed tw0 bombers, each with a themed embroidery in tribute to either films. The Totoro jacket comes in black with the flick’s beloved character Catbus stitched on the back. The Ponyo one comes in coral with along with Ponyo herself running on what seems to be tempestuous waves. These jackets are now available to purchase on Studio Ghibli’s website.

MTV VMAs breakout star Maluma purveyed the sexy way of suiting up

Who’s Maluma, you ask? The 24-year-old is only the Colombian singer-songwriter who stole the show during MTV’s Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall earlier last week with his smashing performance. He broke the record as the first-ever artist to play an all-Spanish set at MTV’s biggest extravaganza, bringing the house down as he swayed swagger in Dolce & Gabbana’s glitzy jacquard blazer, shirtless. Prior to his set, he hit the red carpet in a sheeny peak-lapelled double-breasted suit jacket — also buttoned up without a shirt. With Maluma’s convincing swerve in pulling off the risqué look, fellow style daredevils may soon just follow in hot on his heels.
