“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls”, Pablo Picasso famously once said.
The legendary painter, sculptor, printmaker, poet, playwright, and ceramicist must have not had a single trace of dust on his soul. But it’s not just his art that makes Picasso a cultural phenomenon, but also his haute-bohemian way of living, and, of course, dressing. And that’s what Senada*, the artsy-casual Thai label, has grasped at for the latest Senada* AW19 collection.

The “Pablo” collection translates the iconic artistic traits of this renowned 20th century artist into its silhouettes, colours, and tailoring. Creative Director Chanita Preechawitayakul was inspired by the Spanish artist’s journey and artistic development ranging from his early sketches to his world-famous cubist masterpieces. Famous for his childlike geometrics, asymmetry, and cubist shapes, Picasso is bound to spark a fascinating and inspiring foundation for the Senada* AW19 collection.
Senada* embraces maximal style in this season’s collection, introducing new volume puff sleeves while still continuing to play with hem lengths from their previous collection.
Many of the looks, from skirts to tops explore Picasso’s signature asymmetric styles. They also feature handkerchief angled hems and sleeves inspired by the artist’s cubist forms.
The Senada* AW19 collection also features some subtle haute couture touches. Winged sleeves, draping techniques and hand sewn knots and twists add a feminine touch to their heavier winter fabrics. Still, the “Pablo” collection also makes for stylish workwear. After all, nothing says an artist that means business like a collared shirt in a hardwearing fabric. Senada’s robust and durable fabrics are just the thing to make you look as studio-ready as Pablo himself.
But what’s key to this collection are the five key colour schemes in this season’s collection. Each one reflects some of Picasso’s most pivotal moments in his career. For example, we have the Blue Palette that reflects Picasso’s well-documented period of melancholy.
On the other end of the colour (and mood) spectrum, there’s the Fluorescent Palette, which reflects the artist’s happier and more energetic “Rose Period”. A nod towards the psychedelic implications in the artist’s unusual surge in spirits, this Palette is full of brighter neons like lemons, cobalt blues, and pink pop colours.
Other colour palettes include the Greyscale Palette — for Picasso’s early monochromatic sketches — and the Earth Tone Palette, for his abandonment of colour in his final years. The latter is also a perfect fit for a collection that fits well into the autumn leaves of the season.
The line is enough to have us all fantasising about hanging out with Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald on the beach in Antibes. Pablo Picasso no doubt led a very fashionable life, and when fashion and art collide so delightfully as in the Senada* AW19 collection, there’s sure to be some wonderful results. Casual, formal, and versatile for travel, Senada*’s “Pablo” collection shows us how style, culture, and a fashionable lifestyle really can all become one.
