Why everybody needs a pair of designer slides to go to the supermarket

Supermarket fashion: it’s the vibe this month. You might as well embrace it.

Our social lives have gone from super late nights to long strolls at supermarkets. And whilst we could complain for hours, negativity is not the name of the game right now. We’re trying to be positive. We’re trying to actually enjoy going grocery shopping.

There’s an art to dressing for the supermarket. You don’t want to look like you tried, but you want to look like you care. Therefore, you should be as mindful when selecting Chiang Mai avocados as you are when selecting your outfit of the day.

But what shoes were you going to wear? Sneakers? Too much effort with the socks. Heels? Don’t be pretentious. Sandals? Too much effort with the straps. Slippers or slides — but keep it classy — are the ideal shoe. Easy to put on, easy to throw off, perfectly breathable, and entirely casual.

We’re not going to Italy any time soon to walk around in designer slides and drink an Aperol Spritz. We’re going to the supermarket to buy the ingredients and maybe some charcuterie to emulate this at home. Read on for the slide style guide.

We’ve been seeing this pair all over social media ever since they launched, and if the FOMO is getting to you too, it’s time to invest. Topped with a chunky gold chain, we’re loving these JW Anderson slides made from smooth Spanish leather. The molded cork footbeds are an extra touch of comfort. So essential.

Pair with: A colourful pedicure
Strut down: Right to the vino section
Price: Approx. THB 21,558

For those who want to get a little bit more obvious with their designer slides, opt for this pair by Gucci. Inspired by the ‘90s, they feature the brand’s signature coated-canvas with the ‘rhombi’ logo print all over. With a bit of a platform, they’re ideal for reaching the items on higher shelves, and even have a rubber sole to provide some grip. Sturdy.

Pair with: Ankle jeans or a denim skirt
Strut down: The cereal aisle, and take some pics
Price: Approx. THB 18,219

A bit more playful, we love Chloé’s Woody slides for their colourful appliqués. The graphic black lettering on the canvas straps is charmingly covered by these, juxtaposing the otherwise more serious square toe and brown sole. These slides have a slight heel too, so they can also give the illusion of longer legs. Definitely flaunt them when you’re wearing these.

Pair with: A floaty short white linen dress
Strut down: The candy aisle
Price: Approx. THB 23,975

Elegant and versatile, Fendi’s Raffia Sandals are a classy summer must-have. We like the subtle-yet-not-too-subtle ‘FF’ motif, as well as the rounded toes and cushioned leather footbeds. Comfortable to wear and easy to throw on with almost any outfit.

Pair with: Dark oversized sunglasses
Strut down: The charcuterie section
Price: Approx. THB 27,224

If you’re going to wear Birkenstocks, make them cool Birkenstocks. The 1774 line was designed especially for this. Part of a capsule that was devised by four Central Saint Martins’ graduates (amazing), this pair is the work of Chinese designer Ding Yun Zhang. Featuring velcro fastenings and cushioning EVA outsoles, they scream “ultimate comfort.”

Pair with: A maxi skirt, as pictured
Strut down: The dairy section
Price: Approx. THB 17,154

Another popular pair we’ve spotted all over the ‘gram, Roger Vivier’s Swarovski crystal-embellished buckles are hard to miss. These slides are made from smooth Italian leather, and rest on a molded satin (yes, satin) sole. The serrated rubber base gives you extra grip, which is perfect for the attitude that we’re sure you boast if you wear these.

Pair with: More bling, because why not
Strut down: The fresh and fabulous fruit section
Price: Approx. THB 49,674

Rubber slides are still a thing, right? For when you prefer a more sporty look, opt for these Givenchy slides. Featuring red rubber straps stamped with the house’s logo, this pair is very light to wear and comfortable enough to last many hours. Sometimes you just want to take your time picking our groceries, you know?

Pair with: Athleisure, and pretend you worked out that day
Strut down: The snack section, you snack
Price: Approx. THB 11,596
