Calling all March-born babies: it’s officially aquamarine season.
According to the American Gem Society, both aquamarine and bloodstone make up the March birthstones, and whilst they couldn’t be more visually far-fetched siblings in appearance, both boast soothing and preserving qualities. This has made them beloved in sartorial accessories, particularly with the sometimes-blue sometimes-green sometimes-entirely-translucent aquamarine featured as a favourite in fine jewellery pieces.
After all, it’s a stone that exudes serenity from the moment you say its name. Taking from the latin for water (aqua) and sea (marina), aquamarine is a semi-precious stone, with roots in the ancient world. Sailors believed that aquamarine would protect them in rough waters, and even today the stone is said to have a calming aura.
Aquamarine is a tranquil gemstone, which much like emerald, comes from a variety mineral known as ‘beryl’. It grows in large multi-sided crystals, which also explains its wide use in mental healing and spiritual practice. Think, tarot card readings and meditation.
Whatever may be on the cards for you this month, we’ve put together a list of five ways you can wear the March birthstone in style. As we slither into spring and summer, consider it a breezily blue welcome to the change of seasons.
(Also, lest we forget, Meghan Markle wore an aquamarine cocktail ring to her wedding reception and carat-conscious fashionistas worldwide went absolutely wild for it. Enough said.)
