Amanpuri — meaning “place of peace” in Sanskrit — is a luxury retreat that blends utmost privacy with serenity. Nestled on a peninsula on the west coast of Phuket, Amanpuri is the first of Aman resorts built in 1988. Designed with unique touches of Thai culture, the 41 pagoda-style pavilions are set in lush greenery and offer spectacular views of either the tropical gardens or the azure Andaman Sea. In addition, there are also 44 private villas located on the other crest of the hill, which guests call vacation homes. Each villa is beautifully furnished with Thai antiques and possess a black-tiled reflective swimming pool.
A 30-minute scenic drive from the Phuket International Airport, Amanpuri is secluded in a natural coconut plantation on a stretch of Pansea Beach. Peaceful and pure, the quiet retreat rests amid swaying coconut palms at the water’s edge. Beyond the shimmering shores, you can explore the colourful coral landscape and visit the nearby islands such as Phi Phi Island. There are also 30 Buddhist temples and five excellent golf courses on the island, all within easy reach.
Set among evergreen trees and native blooms, the 50-sqm garden pavilion features a private outdoor sala and dining terrace. Fusing modern elegance with traditional Thai style, the pavilion is accoutred with rich, warm wood and meticulous flower arrangements. Endowed with teak and mirror, the room also includes a large bathroom with bathtub, dual vanities and a spacious dressing area. The separate shower room had a rain shower, and though the water temperature was warm at best, the exclusive Aman toiletries definitely made up for it.
At Amanpuri, the simple details almost immediately invite you to unwind and sleep better – a compilation of soothing sounds, optimal room temperature and fragrant champak flowers on your plush pillow. Here, you can wake up in your king-sized bed to the soft chirps of birds. With a selection of exotic fruits and freshly baked cookies delivered daily, you can also sample a range of local produce and snacks without even leaving your pavilion.
Drinks and Dining
Amanpuri offers seven dining venues on-site, ranging from traditional Thai to authentic Italian. In our opinion, the resort really wins high marks on their signature Nama Japanese restaurant and their healthy wellness food programme.
Nama – “raw” in Japanese and Aman spelled backwards – is a Japanese fine dining restaurant with an artist’s sensibility. Fresh and simple, each of the dishes are carefully prepared and beautifully presented on handpicked local and Japanese ceramics. The menu features exquisite ingredients imported from Kyoto and Osaka, as well as freshly caught seafood and seasonal local produce. Here, you can taste authentic washoku Japanese cuisine, from handcrafted sushi and sashimi to charcoal-grilled Kobe beef served with wasabi soy.
Designed by nutrition and therapy experts, Amanpuri’s wellness immersions include a health-conscious yet delicious food programme that promotes inner healing. The menu incorporates raw, liquid and cooked food, which can all be tailored to the individual. Our particular wellness lunch menu included two scrumptious starters: a luscious coconut, mint and lemongrass soup served in a shooter, and succulent pomelo oyster mushroom and sprout salad with a miso-orange vinaigrette. Followed by an aromatic Thai coconut curry with jicama rice, plus carrot and coconut cake slice drizzled with yoghurt. Light, fragrant and satisfying, the wellness dishes generally consist of cooling, refreshing foods and beverages, perfect for this tropical weather.
Health and Wellness
Besides the open-air lobby with a 27-metre freshwater main swimming pool, there is a 20-metre secondary lap pool, 10-metre children’s pool and a gym plus Pilates studio. The gym is perched at the resort’s highest point and adorned with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, offering sweeping ocean views. There are personal trainers on standby and private training sessions in Thai boxing, beach boot camp and many more.
With six serene spa treatment rooms, the Aman Spa offers a lush array of beauty and wellness therapies. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Thai oil massage and complete the spa experience by visiting the granite steam room. After your pampering treatment, you will be served a local health drink on the fountain terrace.
With numerous secluded islands in Thailand, Phuket probably isn’t high on your list for a beach getaway. However, as Amanpuri lies on a peninsula and possesses a long stretch of private beach, the resort is far from the bustling Patong and offers utmost privacy. Amanpuri gets a strong recommendation for its idyllic setting, stunning ocean views, warm Thai hospitality, top-notch cuisine and amenities.
