Checking in: The Nai Harn Phuket

Just as we thought Phuket may be too mainstream a beach destination to visit these days, the island has surprised us with Nai Harn beach, a crescent of gleaming white sands bordered by lush greenery and turquoise waters. Secluded yet accessible, this hidden paradise has now been given a luxury twist, with iconic Phuket resort The Nai Harn nestled in its tropical hillside.

A glamorous upgrade to the legendary resort originally opened in 1986, The Nai Harn boasts a guest list of high-profile figures such as Roger Moore, Forest Whitaker, Prince Albert of Monaco, former French president Jacques Chirac — who got to enjoy the pristine beach firsthand when it was only visited by in-the-know locals.

While we wish we could go back in time, Nai Harn beach is still one of the finest in Thailand and The Nai Harn, the only member of the Leading Hotels of The World (LHW) in Phuket, offers world-class facilities and services that do full justice to the beauty of one of the island’s most-coveted locations.

Location

A five-star resort overlooking the immaculate Nai Harn Beach and Bay, The Nai Harn is set into a hillside rainforest opposite Promthep Cape, offering intimacy, privacy and relaxed seclusion, with key entertainment and shopping areas only a short drive away.

The Nai Harn

During high season, the bay is a popular harbour for boats as the tranquil waters are ideal for swimming and a great starting point for island-hopping. Phuket International Airport is a 90-minute to two hour drive from the resort depending on Phuket’s unpredictable traffic. If that all sounds too time-consuming, the hotel can always arrange a helicopter transfer for guests upon request.

Rooms

The Nai Harn has 130 guest rooms, which come in five different types: Mountain View Room, Deluxe Ocean View Rooms, Grand Ocean View Rooms, Ocean View Suites and Royal Ocean View Suites. If you’re travelling with family or a big group, the 111-sqm Royal Ocean View Suites consisted of four luxurious suites will offer you ample space, but other room options are also generously sized for solo travellers and couples. Regardless of room type, most rooms come with spacious terraces equipped with the eye-catching canopied, four-poster daybeds, with panoramic views of Promthep Cape, the Nai Harn beach and bay, dotted with sailing boats and islands.

With large clusters of whitewashed private sanctuaries spilling down cliffsides popped with bright pink bougainvillea, the design of the resort boasts a Mediterranean elegance that resembles Santorini in Greece. Interiors are sleek and minimalist, utilising elements such as clean lines, warm wood tones, richly textured carpets and plush fabrics reflecting a contemporary aesthetic. All rooms are luxuriously appointed with top quality amenities and cutting-edge technology such as interactive TVs and built-in USB chargers. The bathrooms are especially opulent, featuring sliding doors to reveal an open-plan bedroom/bathroom with a bathtub and a monsoon shower with overhead skylight.

Dining

The Nai Harn

The Nai Harn houses three venues for food and drink: Rock Salt Restaurant, a trendy beachside bistro serving Mediterranean-inspired delights and Thai dishes just steps from the white sands and lapping surf of Nai Harn Beach; Cosmo, an expansive, open-air all-day dining venue where a sumptuous breakfast buffet is served daily, with highlights including made-to-order Eggs Benedict, freshly made crepes and a selection of homemade dairy products and charcuterie; and Hansha, the resort’s sushi and sashimi bar, where delicate Japanese bites are served with views out over the sandy bay and the Andaman Sea.

The Nai Harn

With sunken seating and floating fire pits poised in front of a dramatic seascape scene, the last of these is also an ideal spot to enjoy the signature cocktails designed by Salim Khoury, former head bartender at The Savoy in London — the Espresso Martini is a must-try. And of course, you can always count on the The Nai Harn for a unique dining experience for those special occasions. Complement your romantic stay with the resort’s ‘Press for Champagne’ button available in all suites, or host an intimate get-together around the grill on the private terrace with the BBQ Butler.

Health & Wellness

The Nai Harn

With six serene spa treatment rooms, The Spa at The Nai Harn offers a lush array of beauty and wellness therapies, including spray tans, facials, waxing, scrubs, Thai massages and even juice cleanse programmes, all derived from the purest of natural ingredients and handpicked products. The professional spa team can also create bespoke treatments based on the key benefits and results you are seeking.

Verdict

While secluded islands are dime a dozen in Thailand, we’d gladly return to Phuket for The Nai Harn, given its idyllic setting, stunning ocean views, warm Thai hospitality and top-notch dining venues — all of which exceeded our expectations. Whether it’s your first time in Phuket or you’re a regular visitor, The Nai Harn offers everything you need to call home for a few days, offering the utmost privacy away from tourist crowds.
