Checking in: Vietnamese shoreline living at Fusion Resort Phu Quoc

Christmas and New Year’s holidays have come to an end but if you’re already obsessively swooning over the idea of kicking back on a palm tree-lined beach, and getting lost in the wild blue yonder of the sea, then consider this your fresh 2020 calling.

For globetrotters who have already cruised every corner of Thailand’s Southern sea, we suggest you looking at Vietnam for a change of scene. Set in the South of Vietnam (one hour by plane from Ho Chi Minh City), on the coastline of Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc is famed for being Vietnam’s largest island and is widely celebrated for its vibrant blue-watered, forest-covered site – and their excellent plantation of peppercorn.

Although Phu Quoc is known to be dotted with a repertoire of hotels, resorts, dining institutions, and tourist corporations, the island is also home to Phú Quốc National Park, which is listed as a protected area by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources). So for those who are expecting to get a dose of clean air, by all means, Phu Quoc will not disappoint.

Unlike other cities in the mainland, Phu Quoc offers Vietnamese a seaside culture, familiar but entire on its own. There’s a light-hearted atmosphere created through the easy-going breeze and vivid sunbeams. On our visit, we had the privilege of staying at the Fusion Resort Phu Quoc. The resort is master when it comes to a spectacular shoreline experience. It offers a five-star stay and at the same time highlights the 50/50 ratio of nature and luxury, that may make you feel as though they are on to a sort of back-to-nature propaganda rather than managing a hotel business. Read on for our full review on the property.

Hidden on the private beach of Vung Bau Bay, Fusion Resort Phu Quoc is a beachfront retreat located just 28 kilometres from Phu Quoc International airport and just 35 minutes from the Duong Dong, which is the island’s largest town fits for partygoers and sightseers. So for those who are longing to be completely soaked up in the grandeur of tropical seaside garden, Fusion Resort is just the right place to be.

The sun-drenched, villa-only resort features all 130 spacious villas, each with a different viewpoint: ocean, river, or garden views. Each one comes accompanied with a lush lawn and a private pool, giving you that much-needed solitude and solace supported with five-starred hotel amenities.

We stayed in the One-Bedroom Garden Pool Villa with an ample yard and a spacious pool. The room itself mostly features wood elements and is appointed with practical and unpretentious luxury to exude a nature-fused sophistication that tucks you right into the comfort of the wild.

Sized at 1,399 square feet, the villa also includes an open-plan bathroom with a bathtub and a shower, indoor and outdoor lounge, and a light-filled bedroom with a plush king-sized bed. With a colour palette of green, brown, and white, the room blends and relates to the resort’s surroundings harmoniously and elegantly.

Situated before the main swimming pool is Pezca, a seafood restaurant overlooking the beach that serves a selection of delectable multi-cuisine dishes from noon until evening. Set on the sand, just right by the water are Beach Bar, it is the resort’s oasis of concocted drinks and a sunset-watching spot. For a night-tide sip, stop by Soul Kitchen, a poolside bar with an array of canapes and beverages for you to choose from.

What we adored, in particular, is the breakfast. The Secret Garden churns out an avalanche of Vietnamese, Western, and other Asian delicacies as part of their breakfast buffet – think, live cooking stations where they make your Bánh Xèo fresh off the pan. But for those who fancy a tasting menu, the venue also hosts a well-curated course meal, showcasing Vietnamese culinary arts touched with modern twists. All in all, let’s just say the resort is an all-in-one spot for unwinding and dining to guarantee you’d never have to leave.
