In a city that can sometimes feel overwhelming, COMO Metropolitan Bangkok is a tranquil haven that feels far removed from the surrounding hustle and bustle. Having completed a year-long refurbishment project in February 2017, all rooms and suites have been updated to include walk-in rainforest showers, smart TVs, and wireless BOSE music systems, and its relaxing-urban-oasis vibe is just as strong as ever. That’s just one reason this property is a favourite of both travellers and local staycationers; other reasons include the dreamy pool, excellent spa and, of course, the world-famous restaurant Nahm, one of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Situated in bustling Sathorn, COMO Metropolitan Bangkok is close to the city’s business, shopping and nightlife districts, making it a good jumping-off point for any type of traveller. Though it’s located on South Sathorn Road, a major thoroughfare, the hotel itself remains peaceful and quiet in spite of its hectic environs. Both the Sky Train and MRT are within walking distance, as is Lumpini Park.
The hotel has 169 rooms and suites, which come in seven different types. Interiors are sleek and minimalistic, with elements reflecting a contemporary Asian aesthetic. Dark floors and furniture contrast with white walls and light-coloured pieces made from Thai Makha wood, creating open, airy spaces that are calming, uncluttered and filled with natural light. Wall decoration, too, is kept to a minimum, which adds to the zen feeling. Though every room has been designed to feel spacious, the bathrooms feel particularly generous in size, filled with mosaic tile and limestone. We’d recommend booking a stay in either a Metropolitan Room (549–581 square feet) or a Terrace Room (861 square feet), the latter of which comes with its own landscaped private patio and outdoor shower, virtually unheard of in a hotel in the city centre.
While we appreciated the clean lines and lack of clutter, those travellers who like more visual pizzazz should look elsewhere, as these rooms are truly understated. If you like the idea of a calming place to sleep after a hectic day out and about, then COMO Metropolitan is perfect for you. For business travellers, not every room type comes with desk space, so be sure to confirm that yours does when booking.
Drinks & Dining
Seeing as it’s home to one of the world’s top-ranked restaurants, Nahm, F&B is one of this hotel’s strong suits. Chef David Thompson’s temple of multi-regional Thai cuisine doesn’t disappoint, as the kitchen uses top-quality produce from around the world to produce modern takes on traditional fare. We’d recommend opting for the dinner set menu (2,500 THB per person) since it allows you to experience a larger selection of dishes than you would otherwise. Be sure to try a few cocktails made with Thai ingredients, and if you can handle the heat, ask for seats outside overlooking the pool at night.
Aside from Nahm, the hotel is also home to Glow, which focuses on light, healthful cooking and energising juices; it’s also where guests go for the breakfast buffet and a selection of Thai and Western offerings. There’s also the Met Bar, a dark, sultry lounge where you can perch on a stool at the expansive bar or sink into a deep club chair for a few rounds of cocktails.
Health & Wellness
Wellness is COMO Metropolitan Bangkok’s forte, and no guest should miss out on their many excellent offerings. At the heart of the hotel is COMO Shambhala Urban Escape, a wellness centre and spa with a 25-metre outdoor pool, updated gym with state-of-the-art equipment, a yoga studio offering five different types of yoga practice and new hydro pools and steam rooms. Cleanses, complimentary yoga sessions and facials are available as well, but there’s nothing we’d recommend more than the signature COMO Shambhala Massage, a 60-minute treatment using a combination of massage oils to calm and rebalance body and mind. We’ve had many, many massages, and this was without a doubt one of the best of all time.
Bangkok is a city with many fabulous hotel offerings, each more attractive than the next. Given its central location and strong wellness offerings, COMO Metropolitan is one of our favourites, and we’d recommend it to anyone looking for a low-key, relaxing stay — or a place to recover from wild nights out on the town. And if you’re looking for the kind of hotel where you never have to leave, you’ll find the pool is a perfect place to while away the day.
