Popular makeup artist Jasmeet Kapany on classic bridal makeup and current trends

Long gone are the days of bridal makeup following a set format of dark eyeshadows and lips. Bridal makeup today is an art, created by a makeup artist who understands the latest trends and most importantly the look that the bride wants to follow. Delhi-based Jasmeet Kapany is one such artist whose work is well-balanced, minimalist and with a sense of individuality and flair. Lifestyle Asia spoke to the leading lady of bridal makeup on current trends, and tips and tricks brides need to know about makeup.

What are the biggest makeup trends this season?

Lips have always been the focus in bridal makeup but I think this year it’s all about the eyes. Heavier eyes – smoky, cat-eye, liner, you name it. I personally think that brides should experiment with their eyes a bit more.

How should one prep their skin for bridal makeup?

A good facial lifts up the skin – a hydra-facial is a great investment, so go for one if you can – and a good moisturiser can act as a great base. I suggest drinking lots of water, avoiding the sun and sleeping well the night before.

Lip colours that suit Indian brides best?

All my favourite M.A.C lipsticks suit our skin – Flat Out Fabulous, Mehr, Ruby Woo, Velvet Teddy and All Fired Up.

A bridal product that has been a game-changer for you?

A good primer does the heavy lifting in bridal makeup. It makes sure your makeup stays put for 24 hours without creasing. I love the Elcie Pearl Radiance Primer. It’s great for mature skin too, so moms can wear it as well. My recommendations are Makeup Forever HD Primer for dry skin, and Smashbox Photo Finish Primer for oily skin.

What should brides usually carry with them to their wedding?

Blotting paper, a similar shade of lipstick for touch-ups and their favourite compact powder.

Makeup mistakes that brides make?

Carrying the wrong lashes and the wrong shade of foundation. These two require a lot of research.

What should a bride look for in a bridal makeup artist?

An individual style. And they should be able to get along. Also, I think most brides assume that a makeup artist can do any style. We can, but the point is that you must select an artist based on their sensibilities. Carrying a reference photo is great but allow room for the makeup artist’s work to also shine through. Sometimes I get brides who want me to work on a style that’s not me. A mere copy and paste thing doesn’t work.

What’s your personal style like?

I like classic makeup, on the more elegant, timeless side of things. Simplicity is another signature – I work with less makeup, but those that are more impactful. I feel that a bride’s skin should shine through – you don’t add another layer of foundation when the natural glow is showing through. That’s why it’s important to perfect the base – it needs to be minimal and natural.
