Review: Bold, unsticky summer lips with the new Dior Addict Lacquer Plump

As summer approaches, the vibrant, breezier wardrobes and balmier weather mean we want to shed all the heaviness of winter off our makeup, too. Swapping out our lip repertoire from heavy, creamy plums and reds to brighter pops of gloss or simple swathes of long-lasting lip stains is a smart transition into summer; with that in mind, Dior Addict’s newest lip lacquer has arrived just in time.

Dior Addict Lacquer Plump - Bella Hadid

Last year’s Dior Addict Lacquer Stick (HK$280), the predecessor of the latest product, was a lacquer-balm hybrid delivering bright saturated colour with a light, glossy finish. Its ensuing popularity was mostly due to its weightless formula, and now, the 2018 iteration — the Dior Addict Lacquer Plump — is made to be an all-night party on your lips: incredibly lightweight, more moisturising the longer you wear it, and glides on like butter — not to mention stays on for eight-hour-long wear. As the brand’s face Bella Hadid aptly puts it, “Dior Addict is a party! It’s all about party! It’s all about colour, light and shine!”

Speaking of getting party-ready, for the Lacquer Plump’s official global launch party, Dior invited Hong Kong fashion stylist and blogger Tina Leung (@tinaleung) to Los Angeles to get ready with the stars, who you can see donning the new lip below in a selection of Lifestyle Asia-exclusive photos.

Dior boasts this new lippie as the first ever plumping “lip ink,” utilising “unique radiance and shine effects,” according to Peter Philips, Creative and Image Director for Dior Makeup. Like an ink, it will gradually tint your lips the longer you wear it, lasting up to eight hours. Apparently, hydration levels also climb by 78%, even 24 hours after application.

Featuring hibiscus extract (a natural plumper) and hyaluronic acid (the holy grail of saviours against wrinkling), the pioneering plumping effect here helps to shape and smooth fine lines on your lip with a soothing formula. Upon first swipe, the lacquer gives off a slightly cooling sensation, and comes off quite sheer — it may take a few layers for you to achieve the opaque bold lip you want, but this also spells versatility. You could swipe on a thin layer just to give a moisturising sheen, or layer it up for a gloss bomb. We particularly like the effect of layering glitter shades on top of classic matching shades, such as 677 Disco Dior on top of 676 Dior Fever, a bright fuschia tone.

You don’t feel the instant plumping effect per se, unlike certain actual lip plumping primer products that make your lips swell into a fuller pout, but you do get evident results. I don’t enjoy the smell of the product, which verges on a perfumey sweet flavour, though my favourite part about the Lacquer Plump is that it’s incredibly moisturising and comfortable, almost as if it melts away the dry uneven skin on your lips. It’s also not sticky at all for a glossy product: You hardly feel the product on you throughout the day.

Available in sixteen shades across three families (glitters, classics and neons), the Lacquer Plump is packaged in a rectangular resin tube, and the clear block encases the liquid in a reverse lipstick bullet that’s also befitting of a stylish, minimalistic summer accessory.

The Lacquer Plump suits all-day wear, whether for dark, glamourous gowns or for strutting around in sundresses.

Aside from the new Lacquer Plump (HK$280) and the Lacquer Stick (HK$280) with six brand new shades, three corresponding tones of Dior Vernis in classic, neon and glitter finishes are also available at HK$210 each, perfect for when you want to match your lip and mani all at once.
