5 best beachside restaurants in Hong Kong

We’re pretty lucky here in Hong Kong. It’s a city that’s dominated by skyscrapers, world-class restaurants and bars but in 40 minutes (or less) you can be hiking up a gorgeous mountain or on a beach soaking up some rays.

Just in time for the weekend, here are our favourite beachside restaurants and hangouts in Hong Kong:

Beachside food that you won’t regret indulging in the next day.

One of the coolest places to hangout by the beach in the city, Mavericks is a chilled out restaurant and bar that serves up a sustainable and organic menu where possible. They even have their own organic kitchen garden and farming plot in the Pui O wetlands. Highlights include their fish and chips (served battered ,bunned or grilled) and British bangers (sausages that can be dogged in a bun, rolled in pastry or served with mash), meatballs and pork cheek schnitzel. They also serve plenty of vegetarian options including healthy quinoa salad bowls and a veggie sweetcorn, chickpea and red pea cake.

The cocktails are worth a try to — they have all the classics including Pimm’s No 1 Fruit Cup, Bloody Mavs and sangria.

The Stoep

A great place for a spontaneous dinner date after a day by the beach.

It might not be exactly on the beach anymore but The Stoep is only a minute or two away. Located on one of the few clean and quieter beaches in Hong Kong, The Stoep offers a South African-style menu with signatures such as barbecued chicken and other grilled delicacies. It’s also a great places for a few cocktails before you hit the beach.

The ultimate place to brunch in Repulse Bay.

Maximal Concepts’ beachside concept Limewood is one of our favourite spots at The Pulse in Repulse Bay. They’ve just recently launched a new menu to bring their incredible blend of Southeast Asian, Hawaiian, South American and Caribbean flavours to new heights. New dishes include Canadian sea urchin tostadas with coconut cream, fried avocado, ikura and heirloom salsa and Hawaiian Huli Huli chicken with Sriracha butter, charred lemon and spring onion. Ordering a few of their signature pomegranate margaritas as you watch the sunset from your table goes without saying.

The Ocean & Cabana

5 best beachside restaurants in Hong Kong
A luxurious beachside treat.

Under the Le Comptoir Group (Bibo, Hotshot and Tri) are the two latest additions to The Pulse: The Ocean and Cabana. The Ocean is a 10,000 square foot restaurant with a relaxing Mediterranean colour palette, built-in aquarium walls, private rooms and the most stunning views of the sea. Led by Argentinian chef Agustin Balbi, the restaurant’s seasonal menu is entirely made up of responsibly-caught seafood with dishes such as salmon en croute, smoked scallop with girolle textures and sweet pea as well as pan-seared sea bream with allium puree, spring onion, morel mushroom and edamame.

After a lazy brunch or dinner, we recommend heading up to the rooftop to The Ocean’s sister bar and lounge, Cabana. Also 10,000 square foot, the open-air rooftop is decked out with lounge beds, private cabanas and Japanese hot bathtubs overlooking the beach. This is the place for cocktails, fresh juices and champagne as the sun sets and the DJ starts to spin.
