July is a busy month in Hong Kong, and while diaries are filling up fast, you’ll want to leave some room in your schedules for the temporary pop-ups and guest chefs visiting our city this month. From one of Korea’s top chefs to limited-edition Champagne menus and a travelling dinner party, here are the best menus to check out that will be gone before you know it.
VEA x Jungsik 4 Hands Dinner
When: 28–29 July

Executive chef of VEA, Vicky Cheng, and Seoul-based culinary superstar Jungsik Yim are teaming up to present a 4 Hands Dinner at the end of the month, set to be one of the most anticipated pop-ups of the year. The Michelin-starred chef Yim has pioneered new grounds with his “New Korean” cuisine at Jungsik, presiding over the 1-Michelin-starred Jungsik flagship in Seoul and 2-Michelin-starred outpost in New York City — the first Korean restaurant in the world to receive two stars, currently ranked #93 on the the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
Jungsik’s visionary approach goes hand-in-hand with Cheng’s progressive cooking at VEA, teeing up this event to be an culinary crossover of epic proportions. The 8-course menu draws from Chinese, French, and Korean influences, encompassing dishes such as 8 Chinese mushroom with black truffle, roasted sea cucumber with shaoxing wine, Korean-style beef short ribs, and Jungsik’s special take on Korean kimbap. Priced at HK$2,380 plus 10% service charge, the menu includes a glass of Krug Grande Cuvee, with the optional drink pairing for HK$680 extra, featuring specially curated cocktails from mixologist Antonio Lai.

One Star House Party’s five-week summer pop-up is selling out fast, but you can still nab tickets for select dates from mid to end of July. The exciting event sees James Sharman and his team preparing one signature dish from each of the eight pop-ups (in eight different locations) they’ve held so far, presenting a unique culinary journey that flits across countries and continents. Expect everything from the fresh flavours of Saigon to the spicy and bold flavours of Latin America, presented along with stories of their travels and inspirations behind each dish. From our previous experiences with this young and passionate team, we’re declaring this as one of the not-to-be-missed culinary events of the year.

Laurent-Perrier Tasting Menu at The Ocean by Olivier Bellin

Repulse Bay’s seafood palace The Ocean has recently welcomed onboard a new Executive Chef, Olivier Bellin, and they’re celebrating by popping open the bubbly this summer. In collaboration with renowned Champagne house Laurent-Perrier, the restaurant is presenting a special 5-course degustation, with each dish paired with one of Laurent-Perrier’s exclusive Champagnes.
Start with the cauliflower and parmesan ice cream with squid ink jus, its briny flavours balanced out by the pure Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut, followed by pan-seared Brittany langoustine complemented by Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Alexandra Rosé, an exclusive vintage only released in select years. The meal progresses with blue lobster served three ways and pan-fried turbot with chorizo and seasonal vegetables, before culminating in the strawberry delight — the red fruit enhanced by the roundness of Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé. For those who love fine Champagnes and fresh seafood, this is one menu that you shouldn’t pass up.

Philippe Orrico’s Michelin-starred ON Dining is set to transform into a quaint Parisian bistro this month, serving up a lighter, more casual menu of French favourites to celebrate the summer season. Decked out in vibrant fuschia, ON’s upper level is sporting an all new look, designed to offer a more casual experience than the lengthy degustation at ON, with a slew of comfort food favourites and tempting desserts from the decorated chef.
Start off the meal with mizuna salad with dried garlic and honey lime dressing, spicy prawn cocktail with lobster jelly and romaine salad, and grilled sardine focaccia with fennel pesto and Sicilian tomato. From mains, choose from the poached eggs with mashed potato, jambon de Paris and truffle sauce, and poulet frites with walnut salad boasting a signature crispy skin. Round off the meal with the silky crème caramel or light-as-air cream-filled profiteroles for a quintessential French bistro meal.

Polmard Beef at Steak House Winebar + Grill

Carnivores are descending on the InterContinental Hong Kong this summer as the Steak House Winebar + Grill serves up exclusive cuts from one of the most celebrated beef brands in the world. Through to the end of August, the hotel’s signature steak house will feature a range of imported vintage French beef products from acclaimed artisan butcher Alexandre Polmard of Boucherie Polmard Paris. Often reported as the world’s most luxurious steak, Polmard’s cuts feature a special “hibernation” treatment which freezes and preserves beef for up to 15 years of ageing to intensify the flavour, aroma and texture of the meat.
With special cuts and maturation methods on display, guests will be treated to a taste of this exquisite beef, showcased in a range of preparations from beef tartare with a side of frites to beef maki with black truffle and Oscietra caviar. For the main event, it’s all about the steak — choose from the petit filet mignon (HK$985 for 8oz), long-bone rib eye (HK$3,380 for 35oz), or the 2004 beef tenderloin vintage cut (HK$2,750 for 6oz) if you’re really looking to splurge.

Masumi Sake Pairing Menu at Yamazato

If you have plans to head to Macau soon, make sure you stop by Hotel Okura’s Yamazato for their special sake pairing menu this month in partnership with Japan’s Miyasaka Brewing Company. For the limited time event, guests will have the chance to savour some of the brewery’s finest rice wines from the smooth and easy-to-drink Karakuchi Kiippon Sake, to the fragrant and acidic Nanago Sake, boasting a clean and crisp finish. Enjoy the sakes alongside a smattering of seasonal Japanese dishes from Executive Chef Akira Hayashi, including wasabi marinated in Masumi Sake lees, tofu skin with miso, fig with Kouji rice malt, sashimi, grilled salmon with Shinshu Miso, and deep-fried white shrimp with sweet corn.
