Following the opening of uber-popular Shake Shack at IFC Mall, Hong Kong is about to get another tasty dose of the Big Apple. We’ve caught wind that New York’s homegrown boutique food store and café, Dean & DeLuca — which debuted its first outpost in China inside Galaxy Macau last October — is opening up not one, but two stores in Hong Kong this fall. The first one is located at Hong Kong International Airport (Departures, Level 6), and looks set to open any day now. Meanwhile, a Facebook page has also been set up recently to announce a Dean & DeLuca outpost in Wan Chai. We expect both places to benefit from their convenient locations, building on the brand’s international popularity to draw in foot traffic.
One of New York City’s original artisanal food markets, Dean & DeLuca has grown into a massive multi-channel retailer of gourmet foods, drinks and kitchenware, with over 60 locations in 10 countries around the world — including its largest storefront, a 300-seat restaurant in Kuwait. Opened in New York’s SoHo district in 1977 by Giorgio DeLuca and Joel Dean, Dean & DeLuca claims to be the first store to bring ingredients such as radicchio, balsamic vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes and dried mushrooms to the U.S.. Coveted not just for its fine range of artisanal and imported food products, it has grown over the years into a quintessential lifestyle brand, with New Yorkers toting their Dean & DeLuca bags and espresso cups that conjure up iconic images of cosmopolitan Manhattan.
Fans of Dean & DeLuca will undoubtedly have their favourite go-to items already: a laundry list of fine gourmet products including premium jams, nuts, candies, chocolate bars, extra virgin olive oils, spice rubs, fine coffees and teas, marinades, pasta sauces, condiments, and much more. Customers looking to deck out their kitchens can also browse through the range of branded kitchen accessories, including oven mitts, tea towels, jugs and mugs.
With Dean & DeLuca having evolved throughout the years from mom-and-pop retailer to café-deli chain, many international outlets also feature onsite delis with cold cuts and assorted cheeses; bakeries with signature items such as freshly baked croissants and chocolate babka cakes; and full-service cafés, such as at the 26-seater in Galaxy Macau’s Promenade Shops, where diners can tuck into Cobb salads, roast beef sandwiches and red velvet cupcakes while sipping an espresso or latte. The Macau outlet also sells special items such as Hong Kong-style milk tea and burnt-custard frappes — region-exclusive offerings that we imagine will also be popping up at at the Hong Kong locations.
The Hong Kong debut marks a significant milestone for Dean & DeLuca’s continued expansion into Asian markets, with international growth having boomed since the chain was bought by Thailand’s PACE Development Corporation in 2014. Currently, international Dean & DeLuca outlets can be found in Japan, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Kuwait, Dubai and Doha, amongst other locations. We’ll be watching these openings with close eyes and eager taste buds.
