The perfect slice: 7 best pizzas in Hong Kong

In a place like Hong Kong, you shouldn’t have to settle for boring pizza. For those of you who have a secret stash of pizza delivery menus or a pile of frozen pies in the fridge, this is your intervention.

Pizza making is an art that has been perfected by chefs from Italy and around the world through years of experimenting, rolling and tossing and luckily, this city serves up some pretty exceptional slices. No matter if you’re after a deep-dish or crispy thin crust or more exotic toppings, you won’t be disappointed.

For days when nothing but a pizza will do, here’s our list of the best places to get a slice in Hong Kong:

Crunchy bites of brussel sprouts balance out the creamy base of the pizza.

For a hearty, moreish, hands-on pizza experience, you don’t get any better than Motorino. With two branches, one in Soho and the other in Wan Chai, Motorino is one of the most popular pizzeria chains in New York and serves fresh, made-to-order Neopolitan-style pizzas. Each slice features their signature crispy and puffy outer edge. Our favourites include their legendary brussels sprouts pizza with fior di latte, garlic, pecorino, smoked pancetta and olive oil (HK$158) and the fiery soppressata piccante pizza with tomato sauce, fior di latte, spicy soppressata, fresh chillies, garlic, oregano, pecorino and olive oil (HK158).

All pizzas can be customised according to whatever you fancy, which also makes the spot extremely vegetarian friendly. Some veggie options off the menu include a spinach and scamorza offering and a delicious quattro formaggi (gorgonzola, provolone piccante, fior di latte, pecorino, parsley and chilli olive oil). They even deliver to Hong Kong Island — can it get any better?

3/3rds offers the most light and crunchy pizzas in town — perfect for lunch.

Now that 3/3rds has opened in Central, we no longer need to wait until we happen to be in  the Wong Chuk Hang neighbourhood to get our fix of fresh salads, soups, cheese toasties and ultra-thin pizzas. Beautiful to look at and a treat to eat, the dishes at 3/3rds are all fresh and light and will remind you of summer. The crust of each pizza is only 1 milimetres thin and is topped with a wide variety of tasty options.

We love the chorizo with smashed tomatoes pizza with tomato passata, fresh red onion, buffalo mozzarella, mascarpone, rosemary oil and basil oil (HK$150), the spicy salami with chili flakes, tomato passata, fried capers, mascarpone, mozzarella and roasted red onions (HK$150) and their signature three cheeses pizza topped with gorgonzola, mascarpone, parmesan, parma ham and honey (HK$150).

Posto Pubblico

A delicious, fried and dense pizza that’ll satisfy all your cravings.

A word of caution: the deep-pan pizzas at Posto Pubblico are immense — so save this one only for when you’re truly looking to treat yourself to something special. Our favourite New York-Italian joint in Soho, Posto Pubblico, serves up hangover-worthy pizzas which are pan-fried, charred and served in an iron skillet. For meat lovers, we definitely recommend the Bronx Bomber pie topped with crumbled sausage, pepperoni and oregano (HK$148). Other highlights include the Brooklyn Special made with breaded eggplant, roasted peppers and fresh mozzarella (HK$128) and the mushroom, pecorino and truffle Funghi Tartufo (HK$128).

What better way to welcome in spring than with a Tuscan-inspired pizza?

208 Duecento Otto has recently launched an entire new pizza, cichetti (read: Italian bar food) and cocktail menu with their new executive chef Mick Bolam and group beverage manager James Barker. The Napoletana pizzas are served fresh from the oven and follow Bolam’s recipes follow the exact specifications made by The Associate Verace Pizza Napoletana such as using only buffalo mozzarella from Campana, Italy and a custom-designed pizza oven shipped in from Naples.

Using only the freshest ingredients, the pizzas are great for sharing. We love the Quattro Formaggi (HK$198) made with mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmigiana and scamorza as well as the Tuscan pizza (HK$198) topped with mozzarella, goat cheese, semi-dried tomato, crispy bacon and garlic.
