Where to eat in Hong Kong for Thanksgiving 2016

The current political situation in the United States may be filled with uncertainties, but there’s one constant Americans at home and abroad can count on this month after the election is over: come Thanksgiving (24 November this year), brined, basted and beautiful turkeys will be weighing down tables, dressed up with colourful sides of Brussels sprouts, baked sweet potatoes, stuffing, green beans, squash, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

No matter where you’re from, you can (and should) partake in this American tradition, for the sheer excuse of having one day a year to throw all dietary caution to the wind. Take advantage of delivery options to feast with friends and family at home, or head to one of these tried-and-true establishments which trump (sorry, we had to) the competition around town for the best Thanksgiving dinners in Hong Kong.


Lily & Bloom

Miss Thanksgiving at home? Just head to Lily & Bloom on 24 November.

No one throws a bona fide all-American Thanksgiving dinner quite like Lily & Bloom, who pile on the turkey and trimmings every year without fail. Indecisive diners can opt for the Thanksgiving Family Feast (serves five to six people), which comes complete with a 5-kg whole bird (U.S. BN Ranch Heritage Breed Turkeys supplied exclusively to Lily & Bloom from Waves Pacific),  fresh cranberry sauce and giblet gravy, sausage and sage stuffing, roasted brussels sprouts with bacon, truffle mash, creamed spinach, maple sweet potato mash, pumpkin pie, and a bottle of wine thrown in for good measure. Not a turkey fan? Substitute with a bone-in honey glazed ham (HK$1,250 for 5.5kg) or whole roast USDA tenderloin (HK$2,750 for 3g).

Stone Nullah Tavern

With chef Vinny Lauria at the helm, Stone Nullah Tavern is a surefire bet for a tried-and-true American Thanksgiving. This year from 21 November, the dinner menu (HK$548 per person plus 10 percent surcharge) includes a seafood platter accompanied by your choice of garlic roasted butter turkey or southern fried turkey, served with black-pepper-and-bourbon gravy and cranberry marmalade on the side. Fixings include cheddar biscuits with chilli honey butter, caramelised apple, onion and cheddar stuffing, and pulled-pork-rib mac ‘n’ cheese. Finally, satisfy your sweet tooth with apple crumble and s’mores, baked hot in the skillet.

Available 21–27 November 2016. HK$548 + 10 percent per person; free-flow drink packages start at HK$198 per person.

Takeaway option: Stone Nullah nods to that other great American tradition with their TV Dinner for 1 (HK$350), an individual sampler featuring smaller portions of the dine-in menu.

The Parish’s Southern kitchen bakes some of the best pies in the city.

For those who haven’t had a chance to make it over to ex-Magnolia chef Jack Carson’s latest Southern kitchen The Parish, there’s only three words you need to know to get your booking in for Thanksgiving dinner: deep fried turkey. Yep, the Cajun and Creole kitchen is putting a true Southern-style twist on the holiday bird, and if chef Carson’s signature fried chicken is anything to go by, this is one dish you won’t want to miss. Sides include mashed potatoes with fried onions, roast corn-on-the-cob, Brussels sprouts, roasted pumpkin, and golden-crusted apple pie.

Liberty Exchange Kitchen & Bar

Liberty Exchange Kitchen & Bar is an easy Thanksgiving option for Centralites.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be a formal, stuffy affair. If you’re just looking for a casual place to grab a turkey dinner with friends, head to Liberty Exchange & Bar for their four-course menu, priced at $568 + 10 percent (available 24 November only). Start with a warming cup of clam chowder and roasted pumpkin with smoked ricotta, followed by slow-roasted turkey breast, honey-glazed ham and cauliflower steak. Wrap up the meal with a generous slice of pumpkin pie, and wash it all down with Liberty’s well-stocked collection of beers on tap.

InterContinental Hong Kong turkey
InterContinental Hong Kong gets into the festive spirit at all of their F&B venues.

Feast on turkey with all the trimmings at the InterContinental Hong Kong, who are doing up the festive season in style with special promotions at all their venues. The Steakhouse Winebar + Grill is offering a three-course meal from 24–27 November, featuring a purple sweet potato soup starter; roasted turkey with chestnut and sage stuffing, roasted vegetables and giblet gravy for the main; and pumpkin pie for dessert. If you’re planning on eating more than is good for you, pop over to Harbourside restaurant instead and feast on the Thanksgiving-themed lunch or dinner buffet (HK$868 per adult; HK$608 per child ages 3–11) with dishes including roast turkey, Brussels sprouts and bacon, and honey-glazed ham.

It’s a Spanish-American Thanksgiving at La Paloma, led by chef Willy Trullas Moreno.

Somehow seeing a Thanksgiving promotion from a Spanish restaurant doesn’t surprise us that much in Hong Kong, and while some might consider it shameless milking, it really does come down to the food, doesn’t it? We’re always impressed by the dishes coming out of La Paloma’s Spanish kitchen, and if there’s going to be a Latin spin on Thanksgiving, who better to execute it than chef Willy Trullas Moreno? The owner of el Willy group will be popping by his Sai Ying Pun spot this month to serve up a special a la carte menu from 23–26 November, with a “Spanish x America” Thanksgiving set menu available on the 24th. For HK$400, enjoy foie gras montadito and potato and pork meat bombas to start, then dig into an organic wood-roasted turkey paired with no less than 10 sides. Guest pastry chef Jason Licker will be stopping by bearing churros sundaes, profiteroles, and pumpkin and pecan pies to cap off the festive meal.

Mandarin Oriental 

Mandarin Oriental delivers a proper Thanksgiving meal, including pumpkin pie.

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong serves up a tasty slice of the U.S. of A. to be enjoyed at home, with Thanksgiving “Top Hat” boxes available for pre-order from now until 21 November. The homemade holiday meal includes a medium or large turkey (marinated and slow-cooked in-house for two days), sides of stuffing, cranberry sauce and giblet gravy, and classic pumpkin pie, salted pecan pie or hazelnut opera cake for dessert. CRFT-PIT Thanksgiving Dinner
Put your turkey in the hand of the meat masters at CRFT-PIT.

Main St. Deli knows how to turn out a mean turkey with all the fixings.

Langham Hotel’s red, white and blue–inspired Main St. Deli does a fantastic turkey takeaway package every year, and 2016 is no exception. The Turkey-to-go Combo is priced at HK$2,038 and includes a 6-kg U.S. turkey, cream of roasted pumpkin soup with toasted pistachios, apple and cornbread stuffing, Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, honey roasted sweet potatoes, baby carrots, almond green beans, gravy and cranberry-orange sauce. We’ve been big fans of Morty’s Delicatessen since it opened, filling the void in Hong Kong for authentic, New York–style pastrami sandwiches.
