2018 marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for The Macallan: to commemorate the monumental achievement that is its next-gen£140 million distillery, the famed Craigellachie whisky maker has released Edition No. 4. The newest expression in the Edition Series embodies the craftsmanship and groundbreaking design at the heart of The Macallan distillery.

Characterised by a layered flavour profile — achieved through combined usage of European sherry and American bourbon casks (selected by The Macallan Master of Wood) — this initially tumultuous, subsequently vanillin addition to the Edition Series is at once forward-thinking yet deeply wed to the history of its creators. “Edition No. 4 is a celebration of The Macallan’s whisky making heritage as we enter an exciting new era,” says Master Distiller Nick Savage. “[It] marks the coming together of our history and new horizons.”

Edition No. 4
Macallan’s Edition No. 4 was launched earlier this summer.

Clad in vibrant Moray green — attributed to the pristine natural landscape surrounding the new distillery — Edition No. 4 is as much about the metaphorical as it is the sensory. The layered usage of seven different oak casks (each alternating in character) is symbolic of the distillery’s undulating rooftop; and echoes the diversity that is hardwired into the latter’s structure (made from 380,000 individuated components). This conceptual abstraction belies Edition No. 4’s crowd-friendly drinkability — it delivers zinging aromatics of lemon peel and orange zest before settling into The Macallan’s distinctive palette of honey, toffees and a surprise hit of clove.

Finding a new audience

With flavours that conjure up the classic Macallan vocabulary and a very contemporary inspiration, Edition No. 4 is proving itself a hit amongst individuals of every stripe; and in some cases, the new expression’s biggest proponents might even surprise you.

Edition No. 4
“I unwind with music and a glass of good single malt whisky,” says model, Jeremy Wong.

Since 2012, Jeremy Wong has been making his mark on the Hong Kong modelling scene. Shooting for pillars of the luxury community (e.g. Chow Tai Fook), Wong’s daily routine involves a gruelling workout and intense shooting schedule likely to take him all over the city. Despite the healthy lifestyle that such a career entails, Wong is the latest in a line of young and dynamic individuals who find themselves drawn inexorably to the image and experience of Edition No. 4.

For Wong, quality spirits have played a pivotal role throughout his career — he recalls the power that a good dram has to diffuse the tension between “difficult” models — and The Macallan’s reputation as the purveyor of preeminent single malt whiskies make it the platonic ideal for almost all luxury brands that he’s worked with. More than that, The Macallan is tied inextricably to many of Wong’s favourite private moments: perfect, for instance, for sipping at the conclusion of a day long shoot. “I unwind with music and a glass of good single malt whisky,” he says. For individuals like Wong, in search of a superlative drinking experience, Edition No. 4 always delivers.

The Macallan Edition No. 4 is now available at select retailers throughout Hong Kong for HK$890. To find out more, visit The Macallan online
