There’s quite a lot of exciting happenings for Hong Kong’s cocktail enthusiasts this month — The Dead Rabbit pop-up and the exclusive preview of New York City’s The Embassy amongst them — yet I can’t help but look forward to June, when my favourite week of the year rolls around: Negroni Week.
For the uninitiated, here’s a brief history: Launched in 2013, Negroni Week is presented by Imbibe Magazine and Campari, and it’s aim is to celebrate of the world’s greatest cocktails whilst raising money for charity. From 2013 to 2016, the initiative spread from 100 participating venues to more than 6,000 in 60 countries –including in Hong Kong — that have collectively raised nearly US$900,000 for various charitable organisations.
The 5th annual Negroni Week will take place 5–11 June — mark it in your diaries now — and organisers are estimating that a total of more than 300 bars across Asia will participate. New for 2017, participating venues are asked for an upfront donation of US$25 followed by any additional donations received during the course of the week. Each venue can select one of 42 international charities to receive their donations.
Currently, no Hong Kong bars or restaurants have officially signed up, but in 2016 we had 24 participants: Quinary, Picnic on Forbes, Zuma, Room One, WHISK, Winstons Coffee, CE LA VI, VEA, Otto Lounge, Ori-gin, Stockton, BeefBar, Potato Head Hong Kong, Fish School, 208 Duecentto Otto, Topiary, The Envoy, Mercedes ME, Flint Bar & Grill, The Pawn, Mr. & Mrs. Fox, The Ocean, Hotshot, and Back Bar at Ham & Sherry. (Meanwhile, we hear that several Singapore bars have already signed up this year.)
Here’s hoping those establishments — the ones that are still open, anyway — and others join the cause this year, as it’s not every day that you can do well for others simply by ordering a cocktail. Negroni Week registration is currently open through 1 June, so now would be a good time to encourage your favourite drinking establishments to participate in this worthy initiative. Aside from the places listed above, here’s who I’d like to see join in the fun this year: The Pontiac, Stazione Novella, Buenos Aires Polo Club, Pici, Dr. Fern’s Gin Parlour, Ping Pong Giontería, Artesian, NEO Cocktail Club, Pirata, and Posto Pubblicco. What’s on your list?
