Hong Kong is a place brimming with talented and intriguing people. Each week in 27 Questions, we get up close and personal with the city’s notable personalities, learning about their whims, aversions, pivotal life moments, and hopes and dreams — all in roughly the same duration it takes to sit through a two-minute speed date.

In a world of globalisation that has been blown up by social media platforms such as Instagram or Tiktok, we are constantly being fed with content by tens of thousands of ‘influencers’ — mostly millennials who found their voices amplified on a global scale with the convenience of a mere tap. But the big question is: Who are the ones that are really using this instant source of fame to inspire and make a positive influence to the world?

As the eldest child of actor Michael Wong and model Janet Ma, Kayla Wong is already born with such a voice, but instead of just sitting back and enjoying the spotlight, she launched a fair-trade business designing and selling ready-to-wear clothes, using her influence and passion for fashion to spread the message of change.

Founded in 2015, her ethical brand Basics for Basics focuses on elevated casuals from t-shirts to tank tops and sweaters, made using high quality natural fibres, surplus fabrics and carbon-neutral materials. She also opts out from making products in mass bulk to avoid waste, and makes sure that everything is ethically and sustainably made to ensure you, the planet and everyone else involved feel good about what you wear.

Other than feel-good fashion, the 27-year-old also spends a lot of time speaking up for LGBTQ rights, and has previously launched a photography series as well as a special line of social conscious t-shirts printed with the text ‘= Created Equal’, raising awareness on the topic of inclusivity — another conversation that is absolutely essential today.

For this week’s 27 Questions, we sat down with Wong to get to know more about her behind all the camera flashes. Scroll down to find out everything from her favourite movie to her fondest childhood memory.
