La Prairie makeup master Alvin Goh shares his best tips to achieve a flawless complexion
Whether you love to splurge on expensive skincare must-haves or you can’t help investing in the finest foundations for your skin type, let’s face it: We’re all a little obsessed with achieving the most flawless complexions humanly possible. Why not cover all the bases by choosing makeup that’s also made to be good for your skin?
It’s become increasingly prevalent to inject serums and skin-saving extracts into foundations, but one of the first brands to do this with potent results is none other than Swiss scientific beauty brand La Prairie. Blending its reputed Caviar extract into its newly extended range of complexion products, La Prairie’s MO is all about creating a natural yet undeniably enviable radiance on the skin.
Each product in the range is injected with La Prairie’s proprietary Skin Caviar — a luxurious lifting and firming ingredient that helps achieve the perfect canvas for makeup. There’s the Skin Caviar Concealer and Foundation, a highly pigmented, SPF 15 liquid foundation with a matching concealer that helps erase blemishes and dark circles alike. There’s the Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation, infused with a pioneering Caviar Water that leaves a subtle, refreshing glow to the skin.
Now, there’s two new members to the family: The Skin Caviar Loose Powder, infused with beneficial nutrients and an advanced blend of pigments that helps set any look with a fine gossamer veil. The Skin Caviar Powder Foundation with SPF 15 UVA/PA++, offers an indulgent, silky mattifying effect with buildable coverage.
With the latest launch, La Prairie enlisted makeup guru Alvin Goh to be the new Complexion Artist Ambassador, and to share a few of his magic tricks for creating a flawless face. And depending on the kind of finish you’re looking for, you’ll want to reach for different foundations — just take a look at his quick tutorial videos below to learn which and how.
Caviar Glow Fusion Ritual
For a natural, dewy glow, you’ll want to follow Goh’s Caviar Glow Fusion Ritual, particularly suited for women on the go — especially since it only requires the Skin Caviar Essence-in-Foundation. After cleansing the skin, he simply applies the foundation using the accompanying puff, which he claims is essential thanks to its unique texture. “I would press it on the middle of the nose with a press and roll effect outwards on the face. I can’t stress the importance of the puff because it gives you more precision and more focused coverage on areas that you need, such as below the eyes and on blemishes.”
To inject a light, ethereal glow, he applies Skin Caviar Liquid Lift as a subtle highlight on the cheekbones and on the nose, as well as on the cupid’s bow.
Caviar Infinite Fusion Ritual
For a long-lasting makeup look with full coverage, Goh recommends following the Caviar Infinite Fusion Ritual using the Skin Caviar Concealer Foundation. He notes, “the key is a proper skincare ritual before any foundation application. Even though the look incorporates several complexion products, it still looks very airy and soft on the skin.”
“For dark circles and puffy eyes, I would prep the skin with the Skin Caviar Eye Complex, before setting it with foundation — dot the Skin Caviar foundation around the eyes and blend it out for a natural coverage. For a flawless finish, remember to buff the foundation with the liquid foundation brush.”
Then, apply the Skin Caviar Loose Powder to set the look for the day. For a more precise application, tighten the long bristles of the loose powder brush by squeezing the centre of the foundation brush as you sweep it under the eyes and over the face.
Caviar Matte Finish Ritual
The Skin Caviar Powder Foundation gives a luminous, mattifying effect with buildable coverage. Goh reiterates, “The most fundamental step to achieving flawless, perfect skin, before any makeup application, is clean skin.” Using the Skin Caviar Powder Foundation, start at the forehead, down the bridge of the nose, and spread out towards the cheeks and the chin, then finally all over the face.
To give a matte look a bit more depth, sculpting and contouring the face is very important, especially for Asian features, Goh notes. “What I would do is take a shade one or two shades darker to contour the face.” With a superfine, silky texture of the powder foundation itself, blemishes are easily blurred out, while blending seamlessly between shades — while the inherent skincare properties help to soften skin and help your complexion look fresh all day, the advanced design of the pigments also helps different shades blend together as naturally as throwing light onto the face.
“To finish off the Caviar Matte Look, I would use the Skin Caviar Crystalline Concentré on the cheekbones and above the cupid’s bow.” Just a tiny dab goes a long way.
