The newest Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloon takes luxury on the road

Legendary. That’s the word to describe this seventh-generation evolution — one that continues to set and exceed standards for what ‘luxury’ means when it comes to the automobile industry. Mercedes-Benz’s flagship S-Class is, as usual, in a class of its own. Here’s how it raises the benchmark for 2021.

Machine-learning and programmatic algorithms have changed the way we behave; the way we access information; the way we interact with technology. Our expectations for well-designed and well-massaged user-experience journeys are at an all-time high, which is why the Mercedes-Benz Use Experience (MBUX) — debuting its second generation in the newest S-Class — is so fun to witness.

From augmented-reality projections of turn-off arrows onto road lanes to smart cameras that track head, hand and body movements in order to anticipate wants and intentions, it’s people-first design at its finest; a supercar engineered to respond empathetically and proactively to its driver and passengers.

The ‘third space

A nine-to-five job is something of a rarity in Hong Kong, a city that never stops, sleeps or settles. Home, then, comes first. Second, work. Some people’s ‘third space’ is a yoga studio. A well-loved izakaya. A hole-in-the-wall speakeasy. The S-Class, however, is ideated as a true ‘third space’; a vehicular experience that turns a humdrum commute into a destination in-transit to be enjoyed.

From the ‘Energising Air Control’ air filtration system to ten different massage programmes embedded into the seat cushions, there isn’t a stone left unturned in the design of this S-Class, especially when it comes to measures of creature comforts. Audio-visual luxuries like display screens — count them: there are five, some with OLED technology — and an integrated Burmester high-end 4D surround sound system complete state-of-the-art entertainment. If you so desire, you can host your own pulsating musical experience — with bass tones that can be felt, on the go.

Going green

While standing as the pinnacle of luxury, the S-Class saloon is no stranger to
options that make it a touch more eco-friendly. From the hardware composition — now, with 120 components containing recycled materials (more than twice its predecessors) — to the Econyl® thread stitched through the floor coverings, it’s clear: sustainably-minded improvements go hand-in-hand with first-class luxury.

Safety, the ultimate luxury

A beautifully designed interior and nice-to-have luxuries tantamount to a journey worth sharing, but a true peace of mind? The comfort of safety. Thoughtful, top-of-the-line features engineered in preparation for worst-case scenarios. The new S-Class’s aluminium hybrid bodyshell is composed of an aluminium content exceeding 50 percent, resulting in a lower weight and higher levels of crash safety. The frontal airbag for the rear seat and the rear airbags reduce impact during severe frontal collisions for occupants in the back seats. The S-Class even anticipates information in fields-of-vision beyond the driver’s own direct eye-line — a true proactive machine.

Backseat rendezvous

Being seated at the steering wheel of the S-Class is a stunning venture in and of itself, but the backseat experience? Something to write home about. The S-Class’s interior features — which include integrated heating by the neck and shoulders, multi-contour seating and electronically-extending leg rests — ensure a spa-like commute that ups the ante on what ‘traveling in comfort’ can mean. The S-Class saloon is also equipped with a business-centre console, a wireless charging system and temperature-controlled cup holders, effectively transforming the prior oasis of zen into a mobile office — productivity, on the go.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class saloon is priced starting from HK$1,498,000.
