1. Plaid is back
From Givenchy and Balenciaga to Stella McCartney, plaid was all over the runway this season with a twist on the basic coat silhouettes giving outfits a distinct contemporary edge. If you think the classic neutral tone is just too subtle, try the motif in vibrant colours, as seen on the runways of Versace and Prada.
2. Cosy in shearling
Shearling has long been an all-time favourite of designers such as Loewe, Etro and Max Mara. In Fall 2018, shearling coats are available in all sorts of variations, from trimmings to patchwork and applique. Let them in and warm up your wardrobe.
3. ’80 retro black
Power shoulders, black patent leather and oversized ruffles are officially back. Pair your glam black leather coat from Marc Jacobs, Hermes or Haider Ackermann with a pair of skinny jeans, embracing this season’s return of Eighties fashion.
4. Cosy outerwear
It may seem hard to believe, but these puffy comforters have slowly become a hot fashion topic since Balenciaga first introduced their multi-layered looks back in 2016. The oversized padded coats may look a bit bulky and funny, but top brands from Maison Margiela to Marni have reinforced their chic and eye-catching colour combinations as an easy way to stand out from the crowd.
5. Fuchsia is the new pink
As the fashion world slowly moves away from millennial pink, we can look to fuchsia as the next ‘it’ colour, delivering a more vivid hit in a hot pink tone. The colour of the season can be found splashed across feminine coats from Delpozo to Carolina Herrara and Claudia Li. Try it on and see how it lights up your look.
6. The oil spill effect
Along with the sci-fi and futuristic trend, the holographic hues of the ‘oil spill’ trend are now in full force. The swirling and mesmerising colours have been transformed into suit jackets at Christian Siriano and trenches at Balmain and Sies Marjan, and are perfect for completing a bold look this fall.
7. Unleash your inner roar
It’s no big surprise that animal prints have returned again this fall. Apart from leopard, which has traditionally been the most popular animal print of all, we’re seeing a lot of love for zebra and python prints this season. From the classic black and white duo to technicolour coats of all lengths — try on this look to embrace your inner animal this fall.
8. Space Age metallic silver
The shining silver colour arrives just in time for the return of ‘80s retro style. We saw metallic silver crafted into a brilliant jumpsuit or blazer, while brands such as Gucci, Sonia Rykiel and Christian Dior turned coats into glittering disco balls.
9. Trendy in a trench coat
It’s become a must-have staple item in every modern woman’s closet. The trenchcoat is easy to mix and match, great for layering, and goes well with pretty much every pair of shoes you own. In Fall 2018, on top of the classic camel style, designers including Altuzarra applied subtle prints such as stripes (as shown above) to give trench coats a more contemporary angle.
10. Winter whites
As white as snow, the pure image created by the white maxi coat in a lean silhouette enhances elegance and femininity in any attire. We’re eyeing the fall coats from Gucci and Alexander Wang, finished off with a pair of bold sunglasses or leather shorts for a cool, contemporary twist.
