10 limited capsule creations to kick off the Year of the Rat in style

Chinese New Year, which is landing early on 25 January, is just two weeks away. Tradition dictates that we dress head-to-toe in a brand-new outfit — preferably in the lucky colour red — on the first day of the lunar calendar. In addition to symbolising a fresh start, the audacious red hue is meant to rid us of bad spirits and attract good fortune.

Feeling unprepared? There’s still time for a shopping spree, and many of the top fashion brands are all joining in the celebration with limited Year of the Rat capsule creations to help you begin the lunar calendar on a style high. Scroll down to see our list of 10 favourites we’ve picked out for you.

Creative director Alessandro Michele takes us on a trip to the magical land of Disney with its Year of the Mouse collection, featuring none other than Walt Disney’s True Original: Mickey Mouse.

The collection embraces a playful, vintage spirit that pays tribute to the timeless Disney star through a range of ready-to-wear and accessories from shoes, bags to small leather goods, scarves and even jewellery. A new material with beige and ebony fabric has also been especially introduced, featuring a Mini GG pattern inspired by a House fabric from the ‘80s, topped with Mickey Mouse motifs in varying scale.

Other than the Year of the Mouse collection, there’s also a special lineup of Chinese New Year accessories, now available exclusively on Gucci.com.

Demonstrated by brand ambassador Zhou Dongyu and models He Cong and Liang Jiyuan, Burberry has revealed its Chinese New Year 2020 collection featuring refined tailoring and sports-influenced pieces in vivid red, as well as new iterations of Burberry’s iconic Union sneaker and Lola bag.

A limited-edition Thomas Burberry Monogram motif has also been specially designed for the collection, highlighted by an original illustration of the Chinese zodiac that honours and celebrates the beginning of the Year of the Rat.

Dedicated to the lunar new year, Celine’s capsule collection is comprised of selected accessories from the Parisian fashion house’s signature Triomphe Canvas line — including a clutch, wallet, card holder and key rings — which have all been given an auspicious red leather finishing for an added touch of festivity.

Chloé captures the energetic character of this year’s zodiac animal through a capsule collection that includes a selection of new signature pieces — from mini Chloé C and Aby Lock bags to small leather goods and sporty Sonnie sneakers — along with a series of t-shirts featuring whimsical illustrations of the rat.

Dior CNY capsule

Dior has also launched a specially curated limited-edition capsule for the Lunar New Year, but instead of using visuals of mouses like many of its designer peers, the brand has opted for the beautiful and elegant phoenix, giving a poetic, timeless and confident flair.

Always an advocate for the voice of women, Miu Miu chose to endorse the boss lady of Disney, Minnie Mouse, with its Chinese New Year capsule. Other than ready-to-wear pieces from t-shirts to sweatshirts, denim jackets and skirts, don’t forget to also look for the series of pouches, cardholders and coin bags in pink or red, all adorably embellished with polka dots and the elegant, confident and one-of-a-kind Minnie that will simply fill your heart with delight.

Celebrating the Chinese Year of the Rat, Etro has collaborated with Warner Bros to launch a capsule collection dedicated to Jerry from the famous cartoon, Tom & Jerry.

You’ll find the cheeky mouse featured — against the brand’s iconic paisley pattern — on t-shirts, sweatshirts, shirts, foulards and a selection of bags, accessories and small leather goods, cheerfully portrayed in different poses that will immediate lift your spirit as you celebrate the lunar year.

To celebrate the start of the Year of the Mouse, Fendi brings an exclusive capsule collection of bags and leather goods covered in glamorous rose gold for the ladies and special mouse motif in red and gold for men.

Ladies can select from the house’s iconic Peekaboo and Baguette bag in regular, mini and nano sizes, all endowed with romantic rose gold or hand-crafted sequins for a promise of prosperity and good fortune. As for the men’s creations, you’ll find a cartoonish mouse motif adorning a mini bag, a wallet and a card holder that express a joyful and festive spirit in this special time of year.
