Released as part of Nike’s latest ‘Worldwide’ colour pack, these black, beige and ‘crimson’ coloured Tailwinds are a trend-proof stab at one of the classic running silhouettes conceived by the Swoosh in the late 80s. As with the original design, an air unit incorporated into the mid-sole provides walkers with a very smooth ride — dare we say, even run — and the uppers are surprisingly resilient to whatever most urban environments can throw at them, thanks to the predominantly nylon and suede construction.

CFDA darling Tom Ford has a well-chomped bit about how “shorts should only be worn at the beach”. (We’re paraphrasing a little but, you get the idea.) With sandals, it’s a similar idea — say ‘no’ to open-toed — but there is the odd exception. But if much of your daily attire had been relying on this style faux pas, we’d suggest a soft upgrade, with a little something cooked up by Birkenstock. The German label’s ‘Boston’ is based on a Hessian clog, modernised through the addition of gently grained leather and footbed technology that goes well beyond what you’ll find in traditional Alpine shoes.

You too can evoke the languid, tropical swagger of a certain Medellín kingpin (hopefully, without any of the associated gunfire or extrajudicial kidnapping) whilst wearing these braided shoes from Castañer. The family-owned maker of espadrilles — today, still run out of Catalonia — has released these chestnut coloured beauties for summer 2020. With breathable uppers, a jute midsole and rubber bottoms, they’re great for sightseeing, beaches and a stroll around the piazza. Alternatively (and more realistically), they’re a great house shoe.

The Mr. Porter product description unceremoniously describes them as ‘beige,’ but these ‘Polperro’ pennies are closer to a mossy green. Not to mention: they’re likely some of the most comfortable shoes you’ll buy all summer. Somewhere between a pair of mules and unlined loafers in matters of construction, the style stands up admirably to abuse yet is capable of rising to the level of most casual, tailored outfits. Wear these with a beautifully cut blazer in bone cotton, or even a pair of slouchy elastic trousers.

In a world where the phrase ‘formal office attire’ is now a meaningless word salad, Paris-based Jacques Solovière has hit upon the perfect compromise: A shoe which (from most angles) looks like a derby, yet wears like a sneaker. Ideal for, in the brand’s words, “the creative thinker,” the ‘Ray’ is one of the most interesting designs we’ve come across of late, created using a single piece of calf suede to achieve cinched, almost pleated uppers. Fitted with a naturally coloured rubber sole, they’re the perfect ‘throw on and forget’ shoe for a wide gamut of Hong Kong hipsters who are already deeply enamoured by labels like Diemme and Yuketen.
