Monogrammed products are all the rage today. They aren’t just exclusive to blue-blooded royals or the aristocracy anymore. Everyone from bloggers to influencers (and even yours truly) has the luxury of monogramming their initials onto something they own. But why are we so obsessed with stamping our names on our worldly possessions?

Monograms have been a territorial claim for generations. The ancient Romans and Greeks used it to mark their coins. A few centuries later, artisans, painters, and craftsmen were using it as their signatures. Now, they are everywhere. You can find monograms on everything from phone cases and bags to wallets, bathrobes, and pillowcases. Bernie Madoff even once had his boxer shorts monogrammed with his initials.

A monogram is a symbol of pride. It distinguishes what is yours, and the many styles a monogram can come in will prove your discerning taste. There’s a practical reason too, as people will be less inclined to steal something that’s prominently emblazoned with your name.

If you want to get in on some of that monogram action, here are the luxury brands that will let you put a personalised spin on their products.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton’s logo is arguably the most recognisable monogram in the world. With the French luxury marque’s Mon Monogram service, you can have your own initials stand out from the sea of LVs. Have your pick of what you want to be monogrammed: The Keepall Bandoulière, a wallet, or your favourite trunk. Each initial is meticulously hand-painted. Be prepared for a waiting time of up to three months, though.

Gucci

Despite Gucci’s personalisation enterprise being named ‘Gucci DIY‘, it doesn’t mean that Alessandro Michele has relinquished sartorial control of his loyal clientele. Every item that can be customised and its infinite combinations have been approved by the man himself. The house has made a select catalogue of its menswear available for customisation with fabrics, swatches, patches, and monograms.

Burberry

If you frequent countries with cooler climates, chances are you have a Burberry trench coat hanging in your closet. To make that coat uniquely yours, the British fashion giant lets you monogram up to three of your initials on the inner panel of the coat. Burberry lets you monogram its scarves, bags, small leather goods and fragrances too.

Bottega Veneta

Tomas Maier decided to let the monogram take centre stage with Bottega Veneta’s Spring/Summer 18 collection. The Italian house’s personalisation service launched just a few months ago, bringing its motto “When Your Own Initials Are Enough” — which was coined in the ’70s — to life. At the Bottega Veneta boutiques, you can emboss, stamp, or stitch your initials. The former two can be done on the spot, while the latter will have to be sent to Milan to complete.

Goyard

The bags from Goyard are only half the reason why people flock to the maison. It is the multitude of personalisation options that draws the bulk of its unending line of devoted customers. Besides inscribing your initials onto your St. Louis or St. Sulpice, you can add stripes, stars, and other customised add-ons. No crowns, however. That motif is strictly limited to those with blue blood. Pictured here is our own personalised logo, which we created using the brand’s monogram generator here.
